The Mrs. will no longer have to complain about the house lights flickering anymore with those nagging hangs and subsequent reboots while crunching - now they'll just hold at a steady dim. :crack:

LOL yeah, I was only crunching for a few hours a day when red smoked by me, but when I decided to go 24/7, then fire up my q6600, it became a lot more serious.

The *apparent* cause, after a lot of testing, was some odd interaction of WGC WU's with Windows Server 2008. I would get random hangs (not BSODs) for no good reason, and could never truly pinpoint it. Successive hangs would occur anywhere between minutes apart and up to 3 days apart. After stressing the hardware in every possible way, and then stressing it some more, I couldn't find the slightest fault with the hardware - solid as a rock. Tried uninstalling/reinstalling BOINC time and time again, but to no avail. Finally in frustration, I installed Ubuntu and have been crunching without the slightest problem or interruption for 6 straight days. The logical conclusion is to blame the issue on Server 2008. [Why was I using (actual evaluating) Server 2008 in the first place? With a 4-socket board, it is the only version of Windows that will see all 4 sockets. The rest of the Windows variants, like Vista and XP, are internally limited to 2 sockets. Ubuntu, on the other hand, has no such socket limitation, it's FREE, and it's running solidly!)

Got bit by this at first. Use one of two solutions: 1. Set update to automatically download but require your approval before installing. 2. If you plan to crunch 24/7 with the rig, set BOINC up as a startup service. The first way avoids getting surprise reboots in the middle of the night. The second way lets you resume where you left off if you do. I prefer #1, since I like to review what Gates is trying to force feed me before installing anyway.
