View Full Version : !! Ultra 1600W - BEWARE !!

Unlike a member of the other forum (who names his builds after Anime characters) is touting, the Ultra 1600W PSU is not a 1600W PSU rather a 1200W PSU unless you hire a electrician to install a special circuit...
Read this excerpt from the [H] review (which is linked below)...
"I am going to start with the power label here since it is by far the star of this entire review. That 12v figure of 117A is not a typo, this unit is really billed as having 117A available on the 12v rail. That single 117A 12v rail is good for ~88% of the units total DC output if a user could ever find a way to load it that much. We also see that the unit is capable of an additional 160w on the 5v/3.3v rails. Now come the caveats to these impressive specifications. This unit is capable of 16000w DC only if you are using the 20A NEMA 5-20R AC cable and have a dedicated 20A circuit. If you do not, the unit has a normal 15A NEMA 5-15 cable with a circuit breaker in it to keep the unit from drawing more than 15A AC. This limits the DC output of this unit to ~1200w-1300w DC but was necessary for safety approval by UL. While some people might be able to find clever ways around these limitations, HardOCP cannot stress enough that users should not attempt to circumvent this restriction in any way.
Coupled with the units impressive DC output abilities we find it has 10 SATA connectors, 8 Molex connectors, 4 6pin PCI-Express connectors, and 2 8pin PCI-Express connectors. While this is impressive for most power supplies I actually feel a little underwhelmed by the connector count. The Enermax Galaxy DXX 1000w has more peripheral connectors and SATA connectors yet it is “only” a 1000w product. With a 1600w product I would think the unit could power more things than a mere 1000w unit. Then again with the fully modular interface Ultra uses it would be hard to add more connector points to the unit. In the end, the X3 1600w should be able to power anything you throw at it and for >99% of users it should have cables left over once you finish your build."
Personally, I will never recommend this product or any other Ultra PSU's. I know of a member of this forum who bought a Ultra PSU and it lasted about 10 minutes prior to a burning smell alerting emitted from the PSU...
Be careful who you take advice from, especially someone who claimed their eVGA Classified MB was shipped DOA, only to later discover that he overtightend the CPU waterblock backplate and was shorting his MB...
My advice, don't drink the Koolaid, take advice from Mr. Wizard or buy this PSU...:bird:

Red dont you remeber that the regular 3 prong plug is limited to 1200watts?
the v220 3 prong plug is not limited to that
the ultra x3 is horrible design i agree with you but the people of XS say its decent
screw them

I have heard of some of them blowing though. Not the 1000 or the 1600 but the other one's. They are not all made by the same company. I forget where I saw the post but once I find it I will post it here. It shows which models are good and which suck which is the majority of the Ultra models.

I am not a Ultra fanboy or anything just like this one particular model. Could care less if the company burnt down. :p

Cosmos...lol
Ur comparing the wrong companies.
Ur mixing companies that are OEMs and those that are consumer retailers
In terms of Ultra...the 1000W isnt half bad. Andyson OEM which make trusted server PSUs. Ive heard mix feelings on the 1600w but thats just overkill for anything imo. It was good at first when it first came out but now there are better options

i agree with you 4yrs ago they were innovators, now they're technology is uber old. i wouldn't buy their psu's even if thei're 1/3 the original price. there's so many good ones nowadays

I have the Ultra X3 1kw as well, and it's been kickin strong for 2 years now, I love the damn thing. Though you guys are right, historically, Ultra makes Ultra Shitty products.
And yeah, normal plugs in your house are limited to 1200watts, special shit has to be installed in order for anything more. Hmm... I need to add that to the list of shit to install in my new house!
Thanks Red.

alright
I have no clue about any Oems
just CWT and enermax and seasonic

Theres a lot...mainly theyre ppl that made server based PSUs and then turn to consumers.
CWT is very common and good. Make the Corsair TX750/850 and HX1000. They also make the Thermaltake Toughpowers and i believe Xigmatek too
Though they make good PSUs...u probably wont have a PSU in ur case with "CWT" posted on the side
Seasonic makes for Seasonic (dur) as well as the other Corsairs not listed. The new Antecs are also Seasonic (not the Signatures...)
The Signatures are amazingly Delta which has shown to be very good
There are others too....
Enhance make for Silverstone
Sirtec makes OCZ (which i wouldn't touch)
Andyson, Impervio
but the ones above are most common

The Ultra 600W is the model that turned into a crispy critter on our very own Big_Daddy...:flame: :)
Silverion... You should buy a Ultra 600W, you like things that burn right?:flame: :)

Call me old, but I still can't believe we have 1000 watt power supplies, let alone a "1600" watter....\
Complete overkill in most situations, even for 1337 systems. :p

Yeah I mean I think one day he will be cosplaying as a FEMALE character at the next anime convention.
I use to be obsessed with anime but like umm not that obsessed that I want to integrate it into everything in my life. All I did was watch anime and like that's it.

yeah some anime are cool enough to watch...
1600w probably too much for a single rig...
maybe make it hover...

Ultra :sick::puke::puke1::toiletpaper::turd:
hah xD ive seen som ultra psu´s go down the hard way too. they have quite a rep around.
i have 1200W psu power. not that i need it at all. it was just with my case, and the fact that its 2 psu´s (650 & 550) makes them extremely quite since there isnt the biggest load on any of them.

My own experience : 4 dead Ultra, even a freebie given by Ultra directly... What a POS :turd:

Power Supplies that supply good power are good Power Supplies.
Power Supplies that don't supply good power, catch on fire, and blow breakers in your house are not good power supplies.

As an owner of a 1600watt Ultra, I can easily say I wouldnt ever buy another one, period. It's given me nothing but trouble, and unless you're using it in a M-ATX case, the cables are way the fuck too short.

I have an X3 1000W and it has been just fine. It powers my current box without problem.
I think before you pull the trigger on any PSU you have to read the reviews.
Jonnyguru and [H] both gave the X3 1000W good reviews, and [H] straight out called Ultra on their non-X3 brands that suck.
The deal about the 1600W PSU was clearly spelled out in the [H] review in August of 2007!!!!!
And the [H] gave that 1600W a really good recommendation.
Personally I think it's way over the top at this point.....but then again, I bought a PCP&C 510Watt SLi PSU a couple years ago and that seemed over the top then.

the cables are way the fuck too short.I feel the same way about Silverstone... the power supply was great, but you'd think they'd provide cables that were long enough for all their bottom mount cases
Impossible to run/hide half my cables in my TJ09...

The cables on the X3 1kw are way to fucking short as well.
