When? Will it perform as good as the 775 chips? These are the questions that keep me up at night. :D
Seriously, there wasn't anyone posting here so I thought I would start.

When? Febuary 09
As good as the 775? methinks yes - AMD claims that you'll be able to achieve 6ghz overclocks and around 4ghz with air.

I have always said I will go with whatever chip is the best at the time. When Intel had the P4 there was no way I wasn't going to get the Athlon. It royally kicked Intel's ass! A few years later Intel promptly returned the favor...
My gaming rig is a Q9550 and my HTPC is an X2 5000.

My thoughts exactly.

well ati did nice work with those 4870s, lets just hope that amd performs too.
unless intel pulls the rug underneath... like say releasing core i7 (8 cores or more)...

Bit late to be competing with the 775 procs when Intel has the i7 out now which would be hard to beat.

For all of our sakes we better hope AMD comes out with products that can compete. If they don't well end up paying alot more than we should. Think how much Nvidia jacked up there prices when they has no competition from ATI. Now there's competition and the prices have all fallen dramatically. Who wins? We do as the consumers. I paid $550 a few years ago for my 7950GX2 because ATI did not have anything comparable. Two months ago I bought the 9800GX2 for $250. Competition is good when your dealing with high margin items like videocards and CPUs.

agreed dave, competition is good...
trend with intel is smaller cpus, i guess 1 day they are gonna cram 16 cores in that lga1366 chip...

The Phenom II will make it back far enough to be a viable option. remember in HPC apps they can even take a Nehalem, so they're stronger in some areas than they appear. What we have to do is determine their gaming performance, and if the IPC enhancements will scale fast enough that a 4 GHz+ Phenom II will be worth it.
Another thing to note is the small penetration of i7. The economy went to hell sans handbasket, so it really still is fighting with Yorkfield, where it is on close to equal footing.

So I didn't get the memo, but still managed to find my way here.
Phenom II couldn't possible have been introduced at a better time for AMD (and us) as far as the stale economy and high price of i7 goes.
I am very excited.

I am definitely interested to see how Phenom II goes, even though I've already made the jump to i7

Well I look it at it this way, 775 isn't going anywhere anytime soon so long as the I7's are above the $200 marker. If the Phenom II offers comparable performance and MB's that kick ass at a sub $200 price point then I may jump back over. AMD use to make great chips and chipsets that could be overclocked like a motherfucker and did it at rock bottom prices and they always had a shitload of features (I really like that I am not censored by the way :D). What would be nice is if AMD released a board that could do both SLI and CF like the x58's, talk about a slap in the face. And before you say "Nvidia would never do that" remember that they have been losing market share for awhile and they need to be yoga flexible, even if it means sleeping with the enemy.

i7 isn't really mainstream at the moment, I would say that S775 would be mainstream product for at least another year if not a hair more, so Deneb should have a good amount of time to try and get a few licks in.

and that 775 would still be around for a few more years here in 3rd world countries...
point of view here: i7 = bragging rights, a little faster frame rates, etc...

Well, in preliminary results it seems that Phenom II performance is underwhelming in most apps, but VERY impressive in gaming, which is pretty much all I care about. Yay.

I'm interested in seeing this CPU do well. It will keep the market moving.
