View Full Version : Should I remove the stock heatsinks?

I've got some Crucial Ballistix Tracers 8500. I've seen where the thermal pads on these things don't even make contact with the HS, I'll have plenty of air going over them. I'm just worried that the stock pads are either gonna insulate heat, or aren't even making contact with the chips.

What do you think?

Don't those damn things die a lot?

If so, keep the spreaders, you'll need them to RMA.

If they're the fixed ones, go for it.

These are some of the original D9's, the ones that die a lot. If these die, I think I would be better off getting a new pair for $20 than waiting on Crucials bullshit RMA process. I haven't used these in well over a year, guess I should make sure they still work before I butcher them lol.

What kills them is the clips used to hold the sinks on.
Take them off and they will never end up pulling the sinks off the bottoms of the chips.
That is what has always killed mine. I have a few sets of those sitting home that are no good because of that.

If you do get the "fixed" ones, just keep them below 2.0 volts as the spec has changed. i am assuming the ones in the pic are 2.2 volt, correct?

Those actually were pretty good. they lasted a lot longer than the single sided modules they released later that didn;t hve the sinks held on with clips.
I think the later ones used shitty chips too.

And like mentioned those above are d9 chips. You just have to keep them cool because heat is what always seems to kill them in addition to the bottoms of the spreaders pulling away from the chips because the clips are too tight. I removed the clips on a couple sets I have and the spreaders stay on fine and remain attached properly.
