View Full Version : Installing on a DC

Anyone figure out a way to install Boinc/WCG on a domain controller? I brought up my old test server last night and it wouldn't install because it detected it as a DC. Other then doing a dcpromo and demoting it to a member server, is there another way around it?
And, since everyone likes pictures, here's a picture of the box:

It's not nearly that dusty now...I swear.

Wish I could help you, but out of my league. Maybe search and ask on the WCG forums, or Boinc.
good luck. by the looks of that beast, I'd love to see it up and running on the grid:D

Yeah, that's a little out of my league as well. Asking this question on the WCG Forums would be your best bet.
Sorry, wish I could help you, I just don't have any experience in this area.

I'm confused, is there a reason this needs to stay as a DC (I'm assuming Windows)? I'd just wipe the thing and install Ubuntu on it, unless I'm missing something.
Then again most of my limited experience with DCs and AD has been on the OS X side.

Yeah, for this box it doesn't really matter, I can demote it. But I was planning on building a SBS 2008 server to mess around with, but it's going to give me some issues if I can't get WCG running on it. It's a very strange check for the software to do, but I guess they don't want boinc being "accidentally" installed on a DC and it getting blamed for something.

Odd, let us know if anyone on the BOINC forums knows anything about it. I can't imagine why dishing out user authentication services and such would prevent BOINC Manager from doing its thing.

Looks like it's the local user accounts it needs to create when it installs. With a dc, it can't create those local accounts but instead would need to create them as domain accounts, which it can't do.
Apparently version 5 worked, so I may try to find it somewhere.

Looks like they keep pushing back the defect to the next release without ever getting it resolved. I think if they made an option to only run under the installed account without trying to create other accounts, it would fix the problem. Probably have to be logged in to get it to run, but that's not a big deal for my basement test lab.
