View Full Version : Reshaping Volutes!

So I got my 3rd pump & BitsPower res top in today & the Volute sucks! It needs a slight reshaping to get rid of the edges & round it out abit for a better flow. Anyone have any experience with doing this? Some pics would be nice to help me out on what I should look to get from it. Anyone have some close ups of the XSPC res tops?

Depends. They all look different. No QC. I have 2, they were different, red had 3, all 3 were different.

Yes I just need to see what it should look like. this one has sharp edges, not rounded out, drops into volute instead of flowing into it. just a poor design.

A volute is a area just above the impeller. It's the circle you see on the top. A spiral volute is a area shaped like a spiral.

Mine is pretty abrupt too, you can try smoothing it with a Dremel. my exit is smoothed, to reduce cavitation and so as to not impede water flow. The intake volute matters a lot, but don't ignore the exit-which is often so much easier to improve.

How bad is it? I would think using a dremel would only make it worse, it's pretty hard to be precise with a dremel. Depending on how bad it is, I would try and use sandpaper to smooth it all out. Start with some 200, or 350 grit, when you get the general smoothness you're looking for jump up to 1500 grit.

It's bad like there is an abrubt drop off into the volute with sharp edge to boot. That needs to be smoothed out then the volute edge round off just abit.

Do you have a dremel and a round head rotary file bit? I used that to make a channel to the exaust on my top. leave the opposite side alone.
