As the title states, what is the model # of Corsair Dominator that is best for i7 920 builds? Anyone know what was working best with eVGA x58 SLI?
Links would be appreciated.;)

It really will depend on how far you like to overclock your RAM... I have this set... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145224
I also have the 3x1 set.
I have successfully OC'd them both past 2000 with 9-9-9-27 timings.... I run the 24/7 @ 1835 ish for my Crunching rig.....
Hope that helps.....

personally i have tried this one on a i7 920. runs the speed as advertised on a evga x58 with its rated voltage.

i also have tried this one,
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145232
but did not clock as advertised rated at 1866. it was running like around 1805 at its rated voltage on the same evga x58 mobo.
i dont have a cpu-z pic though. sorry r3..

My advice is, don't get anything higher than DDR3 1600 with an i7 920. If you're going to run a 200ish Bclk, you won't be able to use any divider higher than the 2:8 on the RAM for 1600MHz. That's if you want to run a 4GHz chip, of course.
Also, the red on the GTs is not the same as the red on the Classified :(
There are better sets of RAM that have 7-7-7 timings as opposed to the 8-8-8 of the Corsairs (though you might be able to tighten up the timings on the Corsairs)

Pricey, but would these be able to go higher with the i7 Extreme 965 rather than the 920 ?

They can go that high with the 920, but you'd have to play with the bclk and the ratios.
The thing is, you can't have it all with the 920. If you want to run it up around 4GHz you need a bclk of at least 191 which means you could try to run your RAM at 1910 MHz (10x) but you're putting an awful lot of strain on the MCH by doing so.
That also means you have to run the Uncore at 20x (it has to be double the memory multi) so you'd have an Uncore of 3820 MHz and your QPI would come in at 191x22 for 4202 MHz (at 4.8 G/T), which a 920 can't really do.
With the i7 965, those limits are not in place. You can just ramp up the CPU multi and play with the other multis however you like to get stable and you don't really need to touch your bclk much. The other benefit is that the 965 is rated for a much higher QPI (6.4 G/T) so it should have no problem with higher Uncore and higher QPI that comes with upping the memory multi to 2:10 or 2:12
So if you want to run 167 bclk
RAM at 2:12 you get your 2000MHz
CPU on the 24 multi at 4GHz
Uncore at 24 4GHz
and the QPI at the multi for 6.4 G/T (can't remember)
Now..despite all this, the performance gains of going to that chip and those expensive RAM modules is negligible. But those speeds should be easier to attain.
190-200 bclk with CPU ~3.8-4GHz and RAM ~1500-1600 with decent timings is more than enough to shred anything you would throw at it (for 24/7 operation that is. If you're going to bench, it's a different story)

I kno this is sort of off topic, but im curious
Does i7 benefit from the higher Ram speeds? Like noticeably? Cause from my experience, the ram speed on Core 2 made almost no difference.
Just curious

faster memory only benefits apps that utilize bigger ram or faster ram...
ddr3-1600 vs ddr3-1865, running nuclear mc, results show cpu did gain abit of performance boost but very minimal....but in games that utilized large ram, it might help it...

The thing is, Honday, that if you tighten up the timings a bit at 1600, you'll get almost the same Everest bench as you did at 1866 there.

I ordered the same memory in dual channel config since the triple channel price spiked after everyone ordered it.
Three kits isn't what you'd pay for two of the triple channel now. I posted for a relevant reason.
Save money AND OC. It is possible.

Yeah I have to agree with the buy low and Overclock the shit out of them. That is how I have been doing it for about three years now. Not only that but as many above have mentioned with the 920's it takes a bit to find the sweet spot in the settings to even get 2000MHz out of your RAM regardless if they are stock 2k......
I seem to find a nice home @4.2 -4.325GHz for the CPU (920) and 1885 ish in the RAM..... Just me though..... Not every i7 reacts the same......
I have two x58's and the same RAM and neither 920 clocks the same......
Also, I will add that with the RAM controller now being in the CPU and not a separate chip anymore even running the Triple RAM in Dual mode, the RAM performs better than the Dual DDR2 did..... I know there is more to it, but I thought I would just mention it....

WOW ! and Thanks for the detailed explanation !
I'd had my heart set on a 965 for some time now, but if I won't gain anything substantial from it, I'm not certain that it's the way to go.
Money is not the issue for me ( at this time ) so, if you had the choice, what would you get ?

Zlojack, would you recommend the "naked" Crucial over the Dominators?
FYI, Dominator GT is a tad too expensive for my tastes. That would tap too deep into my Nikkor lens fund..:)
zlojack
03-26-2009, 07:08 AM
Hi Red. Personally, I prefer the Crucial with the D9 chips. The Dominators are nice, no question, and they are probably Elpida chips, though I'm not 100% sure.
I just think you're paying a bit there for the Dominator heatspreader that you're going to be taking off, anyway. And if the Crucials can hit ~1500-1600 8-8-8 or even 7-7-7 for 24/7 operation, then they are gonna do the job we need them to do with the 920 chips. Once I get up and running, I'll be able to give you a bit more info.
There's a satisfying feeling about taking a 1066 rated set of RAM to 1600, while with the Doms, chances are you'd have to run them slightly below spec unless you get a killer i7 920. Of course, we'll have to wait and see how the mem controllers are in the D0 stepping.

I would add that as long as your airflow is adequate in your case there is no reason at all to get the DOM's.... The Crucials have served me very nicely in the past....... They do get warm when OC'd........
I went DOM's this last time because I focused on my water cooling setup (First one ever for me) and did not want to have any issues with my RAM.... Set it and forget it kind of thinking....
