What would run and OS faster...
(2) x 150GB RaprorX (raid 0)
or
(1) 300GB Velociraptor

2 x Velociraptor's :)
the raid should still be faster than one Velociraptor, as long as it's striped.

I'm not going to spend the $$$ on (2) Velociraptors...
Fry's has the 300GB on sale, just wondering if what I currently own is faster, that's all...;)

I went from 2 raptor x's to 1 300gb Velociraptor. Honestly it is pretty close. Velociraptor is quieter and just seems more snapy.

I wouldn't bother.
If you're going to spend for a faster drive, go for a 120GB OCZ Vertex SSD (Higher price, but really a much more noticeable difference in performance) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227395
The V-Raptor isn't going to make much of a noticeable differerence over your RAID0 Raptors.

why not get some seagate savvio's?

Even a cheap SSD can probably outpace at least the Velociraptor. The 89.99 one I picked up this morning is 175 mb/s read 100 mb/s write. Not sure if that flat beats it, but the sustained times are great.

I have experience with both setups. The raid 0 array will be slightly faster for single application use. But it really boils down to what you will be doing.
If you will occasionally be unraring, copying, writing to your drive(s) at the same time, the raid 0 array will be noticeably faster at these tasks than a single drive. This is where it will shine. You'll feel it in the seat of your pants during these times, whereas the single velociraptor will grind away until all but one task is completed, slowing down all other activities.

Read the Anandtech article, Kayin. A cheap SSD can outpace a mechanical drive in certain tasks, but overall it's better to spend the money on a good SSD or wait until they come down in price, because the cheap ones stutter.

Well, a lot of that stuttering (not all, I know0 is from the OS not knowing how to use the drive. Most of the people complaining about it are still using old, outdated XP.

It's also an issue with the Jmicron controller.
Funny how the Intel drives don't stutter and neither do the new Vertex drives from OCZ.
The design on the "cheaper" SSDs is flawed. If the OS doesn't know how to use the drive, then the drive is renderd shit whether it's good or not.

That's why I said not all. Yes, I know about the JMicron controllers.

Was thinking about getting 2 of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167005 or is the OCZ's better?
Hey Gary thanks for the ruler's! :D

Ive got a G.Skill titan (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231242)coming
128Gb 200/160MB/sec for $314
looks like good value to me
128GB should be ample for OS and Apps and just chuck in a 500 or 1TB clunker for storage

We'll find out this week just how good/shit the drive is. This should be interesting.
I'll probably test under Win7 RC1 so that I get a good indication of controller or OS that's the problem, as Win7 is optimized for SSDs.

Those are probably the best drives out there right now for a desktop user.

I concur, but that price is pretty steep.
In this case, I do believe you get what you pay for. I'd have a pair if I could afford them...

Get THESE guys, $60, single platter 500GB with new Seagate 7200.12.
I have one and am buying a couple more, these things are FAST, QUIET and more than AFFORDABLE.

Caviar Black with 32cache and 2 procie are good.
it all depends on what you're gonna use it for...
SSD for OS purposes 2x64 or 2x128gb raid0 is good... or 1 velociraptor 300gb
1TB Caviar Green for general back up Sata2 3.0 none raid
1 500gb caviar black for daily use Sata2 3.0 none raid

I vote for two of these (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136296) in RAID-0. I use them and they are very fast.
edit: $320 and you are good to go! $320/300GB ~$1.07/GB. Not bad...

it sure isn't ShoNuff...;)
also, none of the bullshit problems with SSD's...

Drive speed is one of the biggest factors of perceived speed on a PC today. Almost all activities worth doing result in storage or reading of files from the drive. I love my overclocked 920, but in all honesty I don't use all its capabilities 99.9% of the time and the hard drive likely dominates for many of the things I end up waiting for, including things like loading levels in games. The HD's get constant use and when loading lots of data you really feel just how slow they are. If your a developer HD speed is a major killer of productivity, compile times can be massive just because of poor random read/write on the hard drive.
Saying that there is a real trade off on price verses storage space and for a modern enthusiast PC I would say you need about a minimum of 150GB for OS + Apps, ideally more like 300. You can get away with less sure, but you'll use that up pretty quickly. If your storing music/movies then that likely isn't enough, but there is no need to have movies/music on a fast drive.
The current options:
SSD - The only one I think has even remotely reasonable price/performance/space trade off is the OCZ Vertex. 120GB for £318 (scan) is a tempting but painful proposition. Its still 50% more expensive than a 300GB Velicoraptor, and its definitely faster but you can get an entire computer for that, or a 4870X2!
Velicoraptor - Nice drive, especially if you use the seek time advantage, but in the UK at the moment they are over £200 new.
Raptor - The original Raptor is very similar in access speed to the Velociraptor, but its transfer speed is lower. They are however about £80 and two of them will be faster on most loads than a Velociraptor.
A normal 7200rpm - Good on transfer speed but random read/write is where they suck. But with 1000GB or more for like £60 they are a bargain, and make it hard to justify the faster drives considering their relative performance level.
I already had a Raptor with my last rig so I added another Raptor to make it Raid 0. It gave me the same space and better performance compared to a Velicoraptor at a lot less price. If I was buying from scratch I would probably buy two Raptors if you can find them, or if you can bite the bullet get a OCZ Vertex. You will notice the difference but it'll only be worth it if your really willing to part with the change and jump onto the cutting edge.
I think SSDs will sell much bigger volumes when they hit £200 for 120GB at the performance level of the OCZ Vertex. That is the moment when they are definitely good as an OS+App drive replacement.
My 2 cents.
