Go and make a Ubuntu live boot CD or USB stick (http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download), and simply boot from it without actually installing the OS. Then copy your pr0n ... errr I mean files ... from the bad drive to a new drive or burn to a DVD.

Unless you get into a terminal window where you will need to know linux commands, the normal Ubuntu GUI is very Windows like. Click, double-click, right-click, drag-and-drop, etc. In the GUI there will be a "places" drop-down menu at the top. There you will find your various file systems, like hard drives. Then you just drag-and-drop, or CRTL_C and CTRL_P, to copy files from one drive to another, just as you would do in Windows. The live CD option allows you to boot and run the OS from the CD or USB stick without installing the OS to a hard drive. Since Windows is not running and interacting with, locking out, or protecting any files on your hard drive, those files that are intact on the drive ought to be completely free to copy and paste elsewhere.

I don't know if I would go right into dual boot on that Marne

When you get Windows up and running again you might try installing Ubuntu as a virtual machine using VMware Player. http://www.vmware.com/products/player/

I'd recommend using SpinRite (http://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm) on it, but if the hard drive is sufficiently fucked up that may only make things worse*.

*Without boring you with details, every hard drive has a cache of spare sectors that it only uses when it detects physical defects with in-use sectors. Given the way SpinRite analyzes disks, it spots bad sectors very well; if the disk is sufficiently fucked up, you'll end up finding more bad sectors than the disk can compensate for, which the controller really isn't designed to deal with.

well after bitch slapping my bro into running to walmart for me i got a new stack of DVD-Rs.Burnt the ISO of win 7 i DLed this morning and also burnt a copy of the Asus BS return to stock software on the hidden partition.
I managed to get my files off the borked HDD via my external hdd dock. I used Easeus Partion ballsack software to kill the partitons and redo the disk as one big ass ntfs drive and started with a clean install of win 7 (Figured fuck asus software) and thats where im at now. i have the nvidia website in the other tab downloading the videocard drivers cuz on a 46" screen i can see about 12"x7" of useable desktop space. fuckin EYE MURDER.

After i get all necessary drivers reinstalled im gonna try out that spin rite stuff and see if it was indeed the HDD all along or if it was something else. also dont know if it has any bearing on the issue the night before the lan port on the mobo just straight up STOPPED responding. just like that out of the blue. one minute im playing BF3 the next im ont he desktop with no connection looking at it like "wtf jus happened?".

moved cables around and reset everything like 8 times. all cables work and only thing that makes sense is port shit the bed on the mobo. hence my trip to walmart to pick up a USB wifi N dongle thingy so i can hit up my wireless. (usually had it wired in since they are right next to each other)

You have to make sure to get an OEM or the same release number. It can be a pain in the ass.

At least you can use that for 30 days, enough time to check and see if your HDD is failing.

In the meantime call up whatever shitastic OEM your computer is made by and request the OS / Driver dvds so you can reinstall. Shouldn't be a charge, but if there is it might be minimal like $10 or so. That is what I had to do for the HP laptop I just had.

Dude, of the many times I've installed windows operating systems, I think I've only taken the automated route once. MAYBE twice.

It takes less than 5 minutes, and you don't even talk to a person. HTFU. slui 4 FTW, bitches.

victory is bitter sweet.
No srsly, back up yo shit regularly. no recovery software will help a physically failed disk unless you send that to data recovery for $$$ that your not made of. (Consumer Level).

This wouldnt be an issue if you were responsible about your private/personal/midget-porn collection.

i didnt lose any data in the whole debacle. i just learned how shitty asus makes there computers and have decided against buying anythign from them again. a simple bobo ass desktop used for web surfing and light gaming for ONE year and in that time frame ive had fans go dead, memory sticks go bad and now a slowly dying hdd that clicks like a mofo ever since. tax return cant come quick enough. hope to have enough for the bare essentials of a new dedicated gaming / touch and i burn your eyes out with a hot fork rig

Steal a better copy next time Marne...

There's a difference between downloading an ISO because your system's OEM was too fucking cheap to include a physical disk with the computer, and pirating an OS. He shouldn't need to use an exploit for Windows activation -- if he went to a command-line and entered "SLUI 4" without quotes, it should bring up the activation prompt set for phone-in activation, which is more likely to succeed (at least as long as he has the correct version for his key, if not the exact SKU)....

The other option is to find someone with a technet account who can just DL the right ISO from Microsoft...

i didnt pirate anything. CD key on the side of the case IMO means i purchased a license for windows when i bought the PC. Since these cheap ass motherfuckers (Asus) gave me nothing more than some horseshit on a hidden partition, I found a copy of the software i SHOULD have received and burnt it my own niggery self. im back up and running now so i see it as water under a bridge or a discarded hoho wrapper behind a fat bitch at walmart.
