I've got a chance to pick up a nikon d40 with an 18-55mm lens and a 55-200mm lens with hood for $200 shipped. The only problem is that the usb port on it might not work(it does have a removable sd card though). Question is, is it a good deal?

$200 isn't a bad deal for that setup.

D40 is actually a hack of a little camera.

Any other problems with it or the lenses?

You are right, Nikon is a hack. :D

You need to pick either Nikon or Canon based on the lenses you could see yourself using in the future and the expense of said lenses.

Canon gas a better selection, availability and price than Nikon. Nikon's lenses are either plastic shit starter ones or pro level monstosities that cost a fortune.

Canon has nice mid-level prosumer lenses.

Noob, do you mean accessories like a tripod, strap, remote, flash, and shit like that?

As far as tripods go, I really like the 3 legged thing (http://www.3leggedthing.com/). Doesn't matter which one you go with, they're all badass tripods. Pick the one that fits your needs and your budget.

Straps

Are you slipping in your old age man?

Carry Speed stuff is manufactured in China and designed / distributed from Texass. When they first came on the scene they made their stuff in USA, but like most companies nowadays have outsourced their stuff to :ricey: countries.

It might sound cold, but I honestly don't give 2 shits. I looked at the other straps from Luma, Camera Slingers, and Carry Speed, and the Black Rapid strap still looks like it would be a helluva lot more comfortable/functional. I'll stick with Black Rapid.

XMT,

some folks like the Toyota Yaris... some don't...

all kidding aside, i had both, coming from 20+ years of apparel manufacturing experience, i just felt that Luma made a better product...
