Keppler should be Q1 2012, and as far as i know, they already got working chips for it, so now its just about making the cards... And apperently they already have running prototypes also... So their are on the timeline so far... But dont count on opgrading yet, its fermi all over again, high performance and high thermal....

The question that keeps bugging me with GPU and CPU evolution is "When is gallium arsenide going to be embraced by the commercial sector?" It's 2012 and they're still mucking around with these semi-annual "advances" that throw us a few more marginally-incremental crumbs - relatively speaking.

Why Throw down all you got, when you can make the consumers pay a little after a little to keep you in business... Think the scenario where either nvidia or amd throw the most perfect product on the market that could ensure all consumers wouldn't need to upgrade in a 5 year period... Neither one would want that

Im waiting for the new stuff so I can grab the "old" 570s and 580s that people are going to dump.

yeah i figure its going to be late 2012 before theres really anything worth upgrading 2 if u own a 580 gtx, unless u have the 1.5 gig vram version then id possibly think about upgrading once the new stuff comes out. unless u fold like crazy i cant see a point in dumping 580's for the new stuff when it first comes out.

NEVER. GaAs is orders of magnitude more expensive than Si. That's why they only really get used in high budget photovoltaic applications such as space based multi-junction solar cells or small ultra high frequency designs. GaAs also has worse hole mobility than Si and thus isn't very good for CMOS. We have at least another 5 generations of Si left (I'm a process engineer and working on N+3 right now). By that time the other material transistors will be more ironed out.

Soon, as in if I plan on buying something around Christmas time, I might considering waiting a little bit longer?

So are the Nvidia cards releasing in April going to be "gimped out GTX480" type bullshit cards?

That's the 50,000-dollar question right there.

Nobody knows but Nvidia sadly.
I hope they blow team red out of the water once more.
We need another great "game changing" card like the good ol' 8800 series!

Most likely. It's pretty well documented the new chip is "GK104" and if you go on the past two generations of NV cards the high end (i.e. GTX480 and GTX580) were GF100 and GF110 respectively, and their midrange parts are GF104 (GTX460) and GF114 (GTX560).

NV must make very little money on their midrange cards considering NV's midrange die sizes are bout the same size as AMD's high-end chips.

GTX460 332mm^2
GTX560 360mm^2
HD5870 334mm^2
HD6970 389mm^2

I think nvidia is simply being tight niped on this subject. but in the past 4-6 years the common factor seems to be with both nv and ati release high end/low low end, then the mid range cards come. I'll be surprised if he high end isnt released either first or at the same time as the mid range cards.
