View Full Version : Plasma burn in problem

Well, shit....

I used to be in the habit of having BNN (business channel) playing on my 60" Kuro plasma for quite awhile at a time. There's a stock ticker that runs along the bottom, along with currency/ commodity etc. info on the RH side, but always in set spaces with the same colours.

I noticed just recently that I've got a strip along the bottom, and kind of a ladder-looking image on the RH side, burned into the screen. I can only notice it when I first turn on the TV, or where there's a very light coloured background. Not sure how long it's been like that - I often don't look at the TV when it's starting up, and I'm not sure I noticed the pale background thing until it got bad.

Afaik, the cure is to run regular video for the same length of time that it took to burn the stuff in. I've been doing that for about a week but it I can still see the strip and the ladder.

Suggestions? I'm REALLY hopin' this isn't a big deal. I haven't talked to the TV shop yet, I'm hoping there's some self-help I can apply. (It's under warranty still.)

There might be something in the manual, which I'm hunting for atm.

red said there is a wash/recycle setting that removes the burnout from his Kuro .. maybe he'll chime in as he'd know for sure .. but that is a problem with plasma's

oooooo, thanks, that actually rings a bell - my hopes are rising as I continue the hunt for the manual. (New carpet recently, and I boxed a bunch of stuff up really quickly.)

Burning is the one major drawback to Plasmas. We have 5 50' NEC Plasmas here at work and they finally started to burn the CNN logo in after a years worth of use.

I can't speak for Kuro, never owned one or worked with one, but I've never heard of any wash/recycle setting for plasmas. I think the burning is a physical defect, not something that can be undone.

go figure, all I had to do was whine in public and I found the manual right right away. (Funny, I don't remember putting it THERE lol)

I found the "video pattern" option, which seems to be the anti-burnin thing. (Manual reads that it "helps eliminate after-image problems when it occurs.")
It looks like a solid white bar that runs left to right over and over.

I'm giving that a shot with tightly crossed fingers.

I have a Kuro as well and there is a clean setting you can turn on to alleviate mild burn in. My set is the Kuro Elite Signature, I'm not sure if the standard Kuro's sport this feature or not.

However you'll get best results turning your set to tuner mode and let it play back film noise (white snow, static, etc) for a few hours.
If the burn is mild that will 'shake' it loose.

I played the built-in burnin-away (just have a regular Kuro Elite)- ran it 3 times (ie 3 hrs) with no difference. Shop told me to use it with discretion as it's hard on the set, so I'll just play regular vid for awhile to see if that helps. Apparently there are programs/ DVDs that are designed for this, so that'll be my next step if necessary.

The shop tech said he's never heard of any permanent burnin in the 3 years he's been there so, hopefully its curable.

Oddly enough, setting it to tuner just gives me a black screen even tho the TV's on - can't figure out how to get white noise. That sounds like a good idea.

Oh well, fingers still crossed.

Thanks for the suggestions.

You'll need to actually plug the set into a RG-6 (TV coax) line to get static. The static is from the source not form the TV.

You may be able to turn the set to antenna mode and have it display static using it's over-the-air tuner if you cant plug in a RG-6 line directly.

Failing that order yourself a anti-burn in DVD online.

The stuck pixel fix and burn in clean settings are VERY hard on TV's and in some cases can actually cause dead/stuck pixels

Just saw this thread. Sorry to hear about this...

I have inadvertently left a videogame paused for an entire day on my KURO, even though it dims itself it still produced some mild burn-in. I did the "wash" for about 10 minutes, then switched input to antenna and ran static for over 30 minutes. Burn-in went away.

LCD or Plasma will burn-in if you leave static images on your screen. Avoid watching channels for prolonged periods that are SD with all the shit around them. If it's HD with the bars, don't watch it for prolonged periods. I always stretch the pictures on SD to fill the screen. I don't watch more than 2 letterbox movies back 2 back without letting my KURO run some full screen programming for awhile. I didn't spend all this money to watch programming with tickers and sidebars. I suggest you do what I did, by an inexpensive 37"-42" LCD for watching the bullshit programming...:2up:

Red reminded me of an important point I forgot to mention... when watching SD stuff -if you don't stretch it- switch it to "GREY BARS" instead of "black bars" in your letterboxing settings. This will make the borders a 50% grey stopping letterbox burn in.

I usually research things to death, but I think I might have missed my homework on plasmas. I didn't think burn-in was nearly as much of a problem as it was in years past, what with the built in screen protection and all. I knew that it was still possible, but I thought that was only in extreme cases where you leave a static image on for a few days at a time.

Ah well, we'll see how it shakes out. I found a couple articles that talked about even serious burn in being curable with time, so I'm not convinced (yet) that I have permanent damage.

And thanks tons for the info. I hadn't thought at all of the stretching of SD/ switching to grey bars for letterbox. As it turns out, I have the bars set to grey so that was some good news.

Hello everyone my first post. I have a 50 in. Samsung plasma and there is a white wash setting on mine. The setting is there to get rid of burn in. Checkout avsforum.com for help. Guaranteed you will find it there.
