man.... always the hardest part of this is thinking of a cool name.... so if anyone has any suggestions let me know :)

I'm making a small gaming computer... ive tried to balance size with power to make the smallest computer possible which will still play todays games with "all the goodies" so to speak :), this will eventually be hooked up to my RealReseraTor... probably gona need to make up some custom blocks :)

so for the Mobo im thinking mini-ITX 2.0 which as far as I can tell is the smallest you can get while still having PCIe x16

Ive narrowed it down to the zotac 9300-ITX WiFi (http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&q=9300-ITX+wifi&btnG=Google+Search&meta=)

ok, so ill need the most powerful single video card available... no brainer here its the GTX295....

keeping with the theme im thinking of the Zotac 295

the rest:

- 1 x Zotac Nitro
- 1 x SSD >100Gb (possibly more for raid if space permits)
- 2 x 2Gb DDR2 1066
- Q9550 E0 stepping

if anyone has any other hardware related suggestions please let me know now... im gona order next week as soon as i can find a reseller for the mobo.

I havent decided on a case but id like to be able to fit it all into an lc09 (http://www.silverstonetek.com/products/p_contents.php?pno=lc09&area=)

at the moment im thinking of mounting the 295 open with a custom waterblock.... im toying with the idea of making a full cover mobo block with the 295 on the other side connected by a PCIe extender cable.

man this is gona be fun :)

EDIT

I thought the name Blade was a bit :jackoff: so I changed it to Atom Smasher, fitting for such a powerful SFF Pc :)

man this is gona be fun :)

Indeed. I'm certainly going to be following this build. With most watercooling activity at the sprawling big-case end of the spectrum (myself included), having the opposite end as a design goal is a refreshing challenge. This is a great opportunity to be truly innovative with an effective cooling system that truly has a minimum footprint. I'll also be very interested with how you handle a "remote" PCIe card.

Let us know how we can help.:)

well i tracked down the processor on the weekend.... its currently stable at 3.825 on my S2E. I should be able to reach my 4Ghz goal.

I just realised that I should be able to dedicate the 9300 for physx although ive never played round with this before.

I just need to find the board now.... so if anyone has any ideas let me know plz :)

well i pushed the button on the 295 and nitro today, so its point of no return :)

found a supplier for the 9300-itx as well and they are seeing if they can get the rest of the bits i need.

next post will be the obligatory pile of parts before test setup on air :)

Wow man will be watching this closely!

YOU STOLE MY IDEA FUTHER MUCKING BAST........ oh ahaha... just kidding.
Lol I was planning to do this kind of a build eventually. :P

Best of luck!

BTW, I'm interested in that Sony Optiarc slot loading drive... was thinking of picking it up myself, when you get it can you kinda just give a brief review on it? Like if it's reasonably fast, loud or quiet, works good or not, flimsy or solid... etc...

That'd be great man cuz i need a good slot loading drive and i absolutely LOVE the fact that I don't have to get a slim IDE to SATA conversion thingy....

well most of the parts are on the way... Baleful is helping me out with my NewEgg order (what a legend!)

after a bit of research it seems that the idea I had for using the onboard 9300 for physx will work well

http://www.guru3d.com/article/physx-by-nvidia-review/4

From the looks of that it should provide a 20-30% boost to frame rates!!! :)

cant wait to try it out

Look what the postman brought today :D
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_5JXSu5Gfgo4/Sbpx7ZnbuGI/AAAAAAAABtA/dlJHc0A4dno/s800/DSC04140.JPG

While I wait for the rest of the bits i had a play with my new gear

First run, plug and play... multi GPU and physics were enabled by default...

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_5JXSu5Gfgo4/SbpxKylZXiI/AAAAAAAABsY/SiJvQHHjph4/s800/296%20Stock%20Physics%20295.jpg

nice numbers for a single card on stock settings. Beats my 3 way 8800s already

Disabling Physx did this

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_5JXSu5Gfgo4/SbpxNBpBhWI/AAAAAAAABsc/SEjYW9vMCIg/s800/295%20Stock%20Physx%20off.jpg

Not so nice, but to be expected

Next I thought Id try an 8500 GS for dedicated Physx

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_5JXSu5Gfgo4/SbpxPJ3zY-I/AAAAAAAABsg/vZ-Qnub7x_0/s800/295%20Stock%20Physx%208400%20GS.jpg

Crap

How about a 8600 GT?

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_5JXSu5Gfgo4/SbpxTH9-NtI/AAAAAAAABsk/-gM7w6EZveU/s800/295%20Stock%20Physx%208600%20GT.jpg

double crap!

hmmm, the reviews said multi card physx worked best with GPUs of the same series... So it looks like my idea to use the on board 9300 for Physx isnt gona work.

oh well.... this could end up being a sweet htpc :)

ballz0r
03-13-2009, 11:20 AM
Sticking to the original settings (multi gpu and physx enables) its time to see what this Nitro unit can do for me.

A few runs got me to here:

the card was barely breaking a sweat with temps at 60C max, so i went higher...

still wont go over 700 core tho and with the fans at max temps are only up round 70... hopefullt when i get it under water i'll be able to break the 700 barrier, but for now im pretty pleased with the card

ballz0r

Thats the idea kayin... I was looking at the bios settings, it seems like the overclocking potential is there... gona need to get it wet before pushing it too far tho.

Ive got heatkiller CPU and GPU blocks coming, but i think ill need a custom block for the onboard gpu.

Here is my first 3DMark Vantage Run on stock settings.

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_5JXSu5Gfgo4/Sces_23YyhI/AAAAAAAAB2c/viy-WrksdUU/s800/9300-ITX%20Stock.jpg

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_5JXSu5Gfgo4/SbpxTH9-NtI/AAAAAAAABsk/-gM7w6EZveU/s800/295%20Stock%20Physx%208600%20GT.jpg

Looks like ive got a lot of work to do.

Kayin
03-23-2009, 10:43 AM
Go read the Bit review, they show the board naked. You really just need a regular block with funky mounting. There's only one chip under there.

You've got limited options in some areas, but if that's a QX then just use the multi for the lion's share, making sure the PWM stays cooled off...

ballz0r
03-23-2009, 10:46 AM
yeah theres something weird going on... check out the difference between the CPU scores.

ima update the drivers and rerun it

just a noob
03-23-2009, 11:23 AM
i still love the fact that the gpu is almost twice as long as the mobo :P

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_5JXSu5Gfgo4/Scjjv7Fi52I/AAAAAAAAB3U/U-dUaRne57Y/s800/9300-ITX%20Stock.jpg

updating to the latest drivers made a big difference.

Im only running on 1 1gb stick of DDR2 800 atm so dual channel and a bit more dedicated to the gpu should boost this a bit more, then overclocking.

time to start bugging joel for those heatkiller gpu blocks :D

03-24-2009, 04:39 PM
woah I just noticed the numbers on CPU test 2 which is physx... 113!!!... my 295 scored about 150... I had to rerun it this morning to double check and it confirmed the result.

I have a feeling this combo is going to kick some serious ass!

ballz0r
03-24-2009, 05:46 PM
I cranked up the 295 to 731/1204 and broke 20k! and the CPU up to 3GHz

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_5JXSu5Gfgo4/Sclh_zL1zyI/AAAAAAAAB3w/r5KWOtt0Duk/s800/9300-ITX%20Stock%20295%20at%20731-1204-1492.jpg

GPU score is still down on what I was getting at the same speeds on my S2E... I think Ill try it without the riser card.

LOL... I just submitted my results to ORB
"Unfortunately the ORB only contains 2 similar system configurations which is an insufficiant amount to prepare a comparison graph"

I just returned from sydney with 4 1200x660mm sheets of 6mm thick uv reactive blue acrylic sheet

its similar to the stuff sold by acryan (http://www.acryan.com/index.php?option=com_acryan_product&product_item=132&parent_id=29&Itemid=87), but thicker

I should be able to make something outa that :)

Yeah, you really have your work cut out for you.
The video card alone is the thickness of an i/o shield.

If I take the 120mm fan outa my psu itll cut down the thickness to about 60mm... id have to install some smaller fans for cross ventilation or watercool it like link's watercooled psu

Worthy
04-19-2009, 11:29 AM
I like the watercooled PSU idea.
I wonder how tough a watercooled PSU is being added to the typical watercooled system. Especially one this compact.

That's what makes it such a challenge.

I caved and bought a PC-C37 Muse (http://www.lian-li.com/v2/tw/flashpage/c37/) today... not as thin as I would have liked but it will let me keep everything inside the case and should be a lot less fuss.

it fits the bill perfectly, right down to the horizontal pci slots

im planning on stealthing the DVD drive down one edge of a fan controler mounted in the standard DVD Drive bay

yeah thats the tough part.... the biggest matx psu ive seen is 400w, and none of them have pcie 6+8.

one option is a vga psu (http://www.sirtec.com/?id=vga400) but it will take up all my watercooling realestate.

another option is to install another matx psu piggy backing the main one installed down where the removable hdd bracket is.

3rd is to strip down a standard atx psu and build it in.

im open to ideas in this area if anyone can think of one

yeah I have a zalman 750w which has a 140mm fan in the top, taking this out and replacing it with a cross ventilation fan would get it down to the required height

Exactly, I don't know how hard it would be to get a custom housing fabricated for a PSU, but I think that's definitely the route to go.

Well, I'm not sure how it would look, but you could get a few of these (http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/enwmnpfocomo.html)and and slap on there with some thermal adhesive.

I'm not sure what kind of resources you have available to you, but your best bet is gonna be some custom fabrication.

From what i remember some internal components inside the PSU can be 'live' and heatsinks attached to them are also 'live', so wouldn't attaching a waterblock cause the watercooling to become 'live'.

I think it was an Antec PSU that had 'live' heatsinks, was causing me a problem when i went to WC it back in the day.

If a heat sink is "live" meaning it's touching a circuit, it's touching ground.

Parts are coming together...

Ramfreezer 2 arrived yesterday
Heatkiller 295 block is at sidewinders... im just waiting for the next shipment of ek bay spin res's and some other odds and ends and will get Gary to send it all out this week.

Just found out my Aquaeros are fucked, so will need to buy another couple of them too... :cussing:

one setback... my 295 is fucked... pushed it too hard on air tests trying to figure out this difference in core temps between gpu 1 and 2 (was getting +5c on gpu 2) now GPU 2 doesnt work at all.. I hate RMAs, but better to happen now than when it was under water.

i might be able to mod one of these (http://www1.acryan.com/_connectx/ACR-CB2605.shtml)T-Sata connectors

Normal sata power is 15 pin

pins 1-3 are 3.3V, 4-6 are ground, 7-9 are 5V, 10-12 are ground, 13-15 are 12V

SlimSata is 6pin

pins 1-3 are 5V, 4-6 are ground

So if i cut off the extra pins and switch the 3.3V for the 5V line.... it should work

11-21-2009, 10:19 PM

I doubt that will work. Really, de-soldering a 24-pin connector with the kind of tools we usually have access to is nigh on impossible. I've seen several people try it, and in every case they ended up making a royal mess of the motherboard. If I were you I'd just get my father to help me pull a langer on the 24-pin (http://www.realredraider.com/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=29808&postcount=283)...

If you leave the pins in the conector its fine, when you try and desolder it you get the problem ;)
Solder your cables to the back with the origional conector on (you could cut it off.)
I think im going to try it with an old motherboard ive got and if it works it can go in my garage :)

I think that the problem is more along the lines of not really being able to get all the pins desoldered at the same time; If I were to try it, I'd totally destroy the plastic connector at the top leaving only the pins so that I could remove the pins one by one over the course of a few sessions (so that I only did a few pins at a time so that I didn't get the board too hot).

Also, Binge; I wasn't trying to be a dick, sorry if I came across as one.

Its easier not to desolder the pins, just solder a wire to the back side of the pins. Its when you try removing the pins that the problems start.

Exactly, and that's why I don't think the right-angled connector ballz0r is getting will really work too well.

Depending on how much space he has, a thing to try might be to cut the 24-pin connector off another PSU along with maybe 1/4" of wire and solder the wire to the pins of that right-angled jaunt. The other two options really seem feasible are to either wholesale replace the connector on the board (bad idea IMO for many reasons including warranty), or to solder to the back of the board.

Shit, I just found this: http://forums.bit-tech.net/showpost.php?p=1879738&postcount=12

Should be a pretty easy mod to pull off if you know how to solder, and you know etch your own PCB's.

Ballzy, I'm thinking of buying the X58 Micro. Firstly, what's your max OC on it, and what's the word on those BP blocks you spoke about elsewhere?

EDIT::
Wow, I should check the thread before asking questions.

I'm seriously waiting for those BP blocks to appear before I buy it. It's either the X58 Micro, or the Foxconn FlamingBlade.

Your only other option at this point is a custom made block by some guy, but it looks crappy, and is expensive.

I thought I read somewhere that the EVGA X58 LE and X58 Micro were laid out similarly enough that you could use the LE block on the micro? I don't remember where I read that, so I wouldn't be inclined to be the guinea pig for it.

Does anyone here with a micro live near anyone with an LE and block?

Ok, MIPS says no dice on the X58 Micro blocks:

Taken from another forum:

hello kone,
many thanks for your request.
actually we have nothing in project with the evga x58 micro because there
where no requests at this time, you are the first who ask ^^
the mosfet section seems to be the same as x58 sli le, but nb&sb are at
other positions, so our dualchip freezer from the x58 sli le will not fit :-((
for a new dualchip solution there is not enough space between nb & sb and
too many parts in the way. so we could only make a single nb block i think.

I've kept a bit of an eye on that block, and from what I can tell, the guy making them is a hardcore amateur. It was clear from some of the mistakes he made early on that he really didn't have a good idea of where he was milling on one side relationally to the other, and he ended up milling holes straight through the block in a few places because of this (at least on one of the earlier prototypes).

Also keep in mind that the only part that the water actually directly cools is that central rectangle -- the mosfet area and the SB area are just passive sinks attached to the waterblock. I can understand cooling the SB somewhat passively, but there really is no excuse for not actively having water flow over the mosfets.

Why not use something like this (http://www.gammods.com.au/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_5&products_id=1670)? It'd be MUCH easier.

If you want a perfectly clean cut for those slots you want, you're going to need to go to a CNC or waterjet to get a good finish.

I think im gona go two loops...
240 for CPU & GPUs with 1" red tubes
80 for Ram, NB & Mosfets with 1/4" black tube

This XSPC bay res is too long to fit with an ODD on the other side.... so I gota find a new place to put the ODD :)

Holy crap, are you planning to hard-pipe your entire loop?

Nah, he just put in a huge order back when they introduced the matte black fittings so that he could do like three whole builds with all matte black parts. I remember him posting the list of parts he ordered.... :coke:

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_5JXSu5Gfgo4/S64X72tFMiI/AAAAAAAAFFE/yC3V3_IScBE/s800/2.jpg

The white would be cut out of the face plate.... it looks simple enough to do with a dremel... :hmm:

The MIPS blocks arrived last week and they were straight off to the platers.

It was funny, I took along my RRTech Plated HeatKiller 3.0 and said "I want them to look like this" the guy looked at me kinda funny and said "your fucking kidding..... right??"

Ill get them back this Friday so hopefully this build will be completed next weekend :woot:
