So my PSU is making a noise like.... uh... well..... whirring? What the hell? Its effing annoying cuz the rest of the system is practically silent and then you hear this loud ass HHHHHHHHHMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM over the top of everything.

What the fuck is its issue? It sounds like a dying fan but the bitch is brand new.

fan bearings perhaps

try hitting it

What PSU is it?

I did, it made no difference.

Its a Silverstone 1200watt modular "strider" series - most likely the biggest problem of all.

hammer it on all sides !!

lol the strangest thing is, it only happens sometimes and with certain bios settings. Mainly changing it from 800mhz to 1067mhz, wtf is with that?

Could it be heating up during higher load? My Ultra X3 was quiet at idle, but when I loaded the machine, the damn fan would really kick in. I got rid of the POS.

Also, I have had a fan wire arch up into the PSU fan before making all kinds of racket.

The pSU is straining. The power requirements are pushing the pSU beyond its comfort zone and the fan is spinning like crazy to keep up.

a 1200watt psu is straining to pull 800watts? What a cheap PoS?

Over at Silent PC web site, they do a good job in evaluating PSU fan's comfort zone as ricey has mentioned. When they reach a certain wattage demand, the fan kicks in.

My Ultra X3 was 1000W and cranked up real soon after loading. I think it also does not help that most watercooled rigs do not have adequate ventaltion to get rid of the hot air. Most of my hot air went through the PSU which complicates things in a silent PC.

I went back to Seasonic and never had noise problems again. I should have never strayed Seasonic, but I am back baby.

The simple test is to take out two video cards and then remove all but one HDD. Then load the machine. You will see the fan spinning at half strength and it probably will be real quiet.

Brut force will solve everything

I have 2 1200W modular striders.. both made the exact same noise before I swapped out the fans.

Most annoying, I thought it was a over-stress thing at first... I was worried.

how hard is it to swap the fans, do they have a standard 3 pin plug on them or do they need to be re-wired and soldered?

Most likely re-wired and soldered, but it's not that hard to do... I've done it many times on cranky power supplies. :/

You're in luck... I still have one of the original fans kicking around (at least I did... it's in the bin now, lol)

It's a 2pin connector - 2x the pins, 2x the ghetto!

Drill a hole and run the fan from a controller like the rest of them in your case - put a resistor across the existing fan jack inside the PSU if you want to.

Sounds like you're hitting a resonance at some RPM, and I don't see any vibration damping. See how the fan sounds on it's own at different speeds while you hold it.

When I opened up my Olympia 1000 (it was real cheap, which probably shouldn't have tempted me) there's no dampening between the heatsinks and the fan. It's just screwed into the top of the PSU case. Same 2 pin connector (the circuitboard it was connected to takes care of the rest I guess). Voids warranty of course, cause there's always a sticker over one of the screws.

Cutless, try to loosen the screws on your fan guards one full turn. If it continues, tighten them two turns. That may fix it. I have seen this on new power supplies.
