In the days following the War of the Ring, as the Fellowship rested in Gondor, word traveled fast to all the peoples of Middle-Earth. In Lothlorién, Galadriel commissioned a memorial of the journey of Frodo the Nine-Fingered and Samwise Gamgee to Orodruin, the Cracks of Doom and the destruction of the One Ring. She commissioned her most cunning of artisans to design something fitting of the ones who had saved all of Middle-Earth. To them she gave much of the store of wealth of the Elves, to make a gift to the kindreds of Middle-Earth to endure throughout the centuries. Many and varied were her gifts, but among the most precious was mithril...

As in the days of Vingilot, Eärendil's ship that bore he and the Silmaril into the West and was set forever as a star shining to light a way in darkness, they chose of the finest woods. In the last of the war, battle raged ever closer to Lorién, and mallorn trees had fallen. Of this, the artisans selected those that bore a peculiar figuring, noting the last touches of darkness in the light, hard wood. Fitting then that these trees that were felled by darkness would live on in a tribute to the power of hope.

http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg148/KayinAlvein/001.jpg

http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg148/KayinAlvein/002.jpg

http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg148/KayinAlvein/003.jpg

The wood for the side panels has already been pieced together from strips of spalted (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spalting) ash, glued and planed to approximately a half-inch thickness. Even so, each side weighs over 7 pounds, but there is cutting and profiling to be done yet.

I have the case skeleton assembled from 1x12 white pine, but it's with a more experienced woodworker, having a bow taken out of one of the boards (my apartment is apparently incredibly damp, and it's pretty detrimental to wood) and some router work done. I have more to see, but right now, my help says it's not quite time to work...

http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg148/KayinAlvein/004.jpg

The artisans remembered the gift of Arwen to her beloved Aragorn-the White Standard of Gondor, a banner wrought of all the skill she had, to celebrate the return of the True King to Middle-Earth. They then took the mallorn, and engraved it with the standard, for the Third Age had ended, and the Fourth Age was the Age of Men.

And, my help looks kind of bored. He wants to chase the Dremel, but my wife wants to sleep.

http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg148/KayinAlvein/004-1.jpg
And the real work, which took hours, even though I've been an artist all my life...

http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg148/KayinAlvein/002-1.jpg

http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg148/KayinAlvein/003-1.jpg

It's just pencil now, but I'm gonna carve it into the wood in bas-relief (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bas-relief) and then silver/gold leaf it. I haven't decided if I will give it the ithilden treatment yet... But, that's many hours of Dremel ahead of me. For now, I need to wake my wife with loud power tools.

For the record, this is the picture you're trying to see...

http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg148/KayinAlvein/11618.jpg
In Ages past, the mightiest of all men lived, one Turin Turambar, son of Hurin. Many mighty deeds were ascribed to him, but ciefest was the slaying of Glaurung, both a great feat and a great evil, for in slaying Glaurung, he learned the truth of the identity of his bride Niniel, and all found their doom there by the falls. Glaurung, slain by Gurthang, which Turin turned on himself after learning that Niniel was his sister Nienor and was carrying his child. Nienor leapt to her death into the Brithiach, and no man marked where her body came to rest.
With that to set the tone, the latest WIP-The Death of Glaurung...

The sides have to be profiled down, and the trees are having green glass cut for the leaves. Lots of work, but worth it.
This side has so far absorbed 20 hours. I see about that many to completion.

Quad is at 3.0GHz on stock cooler and stock volts, am happy as all get out.
Better news, I'm now sponsored by http://www.petrastechshop.com, who is sending 3 D4s to finish my pump woes once and for all. With that handled, I can turn my attention to my next major issue-the foot.
I've located a field of cedar stumps, and Sunday I'm going to try and drag one out with a friend and a tractor. Should be good fun.
Till next time, I swear that squirrel was on fire when I got there.

A final reply for tonight:
Life is interceding here, as I'm adjusting to the cold weather (with advanced degenerative osteoarthritis, I am at its mercy) but also, I'm waiting on the pumps. The stump is hopefully coming this week, and I've got most of what I need to finish off the outside, just have to find the time to do it all. Time is at a premium during the holidays, especially when it means time enough to do stuff like cut glass and arrange it...

Guys, what do you think I should do. That RBX doesn't cover the cores properly, and hits caps. I have the designs for a new block posted in the DIY section, but it may be two months until I can finish it. Even if I make the shells myself, the cores will have to be milled, and I don't have that capability.
I can start jamming stuff in there, hooking up some water, etc, but I'll not get the entire thing watercooled for some months. Will someone please tell me it's worth it to stick it out? This is a year old now, and I want to see it finished before 2010.
Even if I got the CPU block tomorrow, I still have no GPUs to use. This is borrowed from another in the house, my 3850s and my monitor won't jive (my monitor took a fall, and afterwards it hates the cards. The 8800 I'm using has no difficulties.) Come tax time, I'm thinking a pair of 3870x2s, maybe 4870, depending on the budget, and 4 EK Supreme VGA only blocks, with Enzotech ramsinks for the cards. Maybe just a pair of full-covers.
I'm starting to get discouraged, though, after I had it so close and had to sell it for my mother-in-law's liver transplant. Worth it, but it hurts to be so close and have it snatched from you.
Anyway, you guys want to see me do it RIGHT, right?

Of course you should stick with it. If you are like me, then it will bug you to no end by not doing it like you envisioned. Do not settle.
I am on/off with my never ending build. I will not touch for weeks then work long hours for days at a time. It is a hobby and needs to be what you want.

Gearing up to fuck some stuff up.
If you saw the back of this board you'd fucking shit. It's closed cell neoprene and backplates everywhere. Those chipsets do not move. Chose nylon screws so I can't kill it with overzealous mounting.
More tomorrow, including tubing routings...

For scale, the last little fellow is roughly the size of a dime. He's a sand-sifting starfish. I have two of them, two different types of corals (gotta get the guys to point them out on a website, they can't spell for damn) tube worms, and an infestation of bristle worms, for which I have an arrow crab on the way.
I'm tired, this PC is crashing and my oher update is pouring epoxy. I'l work more tomorrow.

well fantasy has never been my taste, but Im referring to fit the and finish. I think the concept is solid, but little things like being able to see the epoxy you used to put the window onto the wood, and the lack of sanding on th edges etc, it just doesnt seem, refined? enough to me... I dunno. Im a perfectionist, Ill go hide in my corner now. I couldnt do better so I really have no room to talk.
FrostByte
03-02-2009, 11:45 PM
just a personal opinion, but i would have gone for a much darker choice of wood which would hide your etchings where you put the reactive ink and just made the lights seem so much brighter and accenting the inside of the case better.

Kayin

The rocks will get moss.
A lot of these edges are going to be so hidden that you'll never know there's an edge there. All of the radiator holes were originally planned with grilles made of poplar with brass screen coverings, so that no radiator is seen. I've got the brass cloth here, but the top ones have to wait until the doors are on so I can align everything so they still shut properly. Same with the front, it will have a grille much the same, and it will interface with the edge molding on the doors.
The best part about all this is that at the end of the day we all have separate projects, and if we don't like this one or that one, we can make our own. That's what I did. I personally think MM stuff looks pretty amateurish. This looks better to me. If you think otherwise, you're free to do so and we all benefit from another expression of someone's talent.

Well, we'll try this again today.
For the board, I'm looking at nickel plating my Heatkillers when they come in, along with the base of my Ram Freezer 4. The chipsets have nickel and blue plexi tops, and the MOSFET block will be the darkish nickel FUFUFUFUFUFUFUFU (as it's the only damn thing that fits.) The board is almost all black, with blue LEDs and a few blue slots. The question is:
Do I go with gold, silver or regular BP barbs for everything that will need them on the board? Since nobody answered the last time, I'm gonna make a poll. You had better have a response this time...

I've modded my 3.1 to 3.2, and am considering adding a switch to test performance either way-I have a feeling that even the 3.1 is just fine.
Also, my one Ring is in, so I can seal the main res, mount pumps, fix a few openings and get the machine mostly together.
All I would be waiting on after that is HK blocks, MIPS block, and making my trim pieces and paint/papier-mache on the base.

Your carving is great! I like this build because woodcarving and what they call marketry was something my father used to love to do. He was really good at it, and this build would have been something he definitely would have followed and been inspired by also being a hardware enthusiast like me.
