Cards making a funny noise...

I've got two 8800GTX's and while Folding, they make a strange sound. It almost sounds like crickets in the distance, but is much more sharp... it doesn't really hurt, but it's and uncomfortable sound. WTF?? I've heard of MB's squealing, hell I had a 680i that squealed like RR's mom, but I've never seen a GPU squeal. Is this normal, or signs that my cards are about to die? So far i'm getting no artifacts, no degraded performance, they're performing just as well as the day I bought them.

Unoverclock them immediately.

every card i've ever owned has squealed. its a real high pitched squealing noise.... im hearing it right now from my gtx295's.

These are vanilla GTX's. No overclock at all. Although they will OC like monsters, for folding I leave them at stock. The noise seems to have gotten a little better over night, but I can still distinctly hear it over the rest of the system.

One of mine crisped itself after making that noise. It's not a good sign, last I checked.

Only problem with RMA is I'll get a 9800GTX+ back just as Ricey did. Both cards are under warranty, but I kinda lost one of the stock HSF for it... so I would only be able to RMA 1 card, unless I can find another EVGA HSF somewhere

Any performance difference in the 9800GTX+ and the 8800GTX? These cards aren't wigging out, yet, but I don't feel comfortable with these things squealing. I turned off F@H for the 2nd card, untill I can get this straightened out. The noise is just obnoxious.

i had a 8800GTX and it made a whistling sound too, and i found later that there is a speaker built into the card which emits the sound while the system is under load, and the more its taxed, the louder it will get. The speaker is used to warn you when a power cable is not plugged in. Design flaw is all it is.

nVidia cards love to squeal when folding, my 9800GX2 does it, perfectly normal.

Thanks ND4, I knew alot of cards/motherboards did it, just never knew why. But reading from that article, they put nail polish on their 280 to make it quit squealing, there is no way in hell I would do that, insulate heat much?
