View Full Version : b@llz0r's Scrap-yard Cruncher Challenge

Ok I have a challenge for you all...
No doubt most of you have a collection of parts from previous builds, bits that were never used or otherwise gathering dust.
Well this challenge is to pull out all that crap and make a computer for nothing (or very little) and get it crunching for RRTs WCG Team.
Anyone able to complete this feat will be immortalized forever in the font of their choice in my sig Forever!!! (or when I get bored of it whichever is first)

Pah, no, I recycle my old ones. When I get all my stuff up and going, I have a Q6600, E6600, E6550, and E2140 at the house. That's not counting the laptop or my 3800X2 testbed.
Build them a PC or they tear up yours.
dang thats fun stuff! good job on that one ballz0r!
Thing is.... when I don't use a part, I usually sell it. So i'll have like 1 maybe 2 systems running and thats it... lol

If you ever become a dad, smee, you'll understand.
Lol yes sir I plan on becoming a Dad, in about 10 years. :D
And I am planning on crunching with one of these systems eventually, but I just can't afford to have extra parts laying around like ya'll do... lol
Kayin
02-18-2009, 03:18 PM
I'm not a rich man, but what I am is cognizant of the fact that the wife wants a PC, the kids want a PC, and if you don't give them something they'll ruin yours. I buy a lot of used stuff, a lot of homemade stuff, etc to have what I have. Two of those are still on stock cooling. I put money into good cases/PSUs so I can keep those with hardware changes.

Ive already put my little girl together a computer from parts I had laying around, and shes only 1.5, simply because I dont want her touching mine.

sure, Im in, Ill try and get my AMD dual core back up and running, its not much but its got a PCP and cooling 500watt PSU! Man I remember when I bought that thing people were like outraged that anyone would need 500watts to run a computer.

Ok, here's where I'm at with my new project:
Right now I've got anywhere from 20-30 laptops I've been given the OK to use for this. They are a mix of R52 IBM's and Z61m Lenovo's. Not powerhouses by any means, but they will dominate in their sheer numbers.
I originally wanted Xubuntu 32bit running on all the laptops, and have them connected wirelessly through our connection at work. All this sounds good right? Well... I got linux loaded up on one machine before I left work and it didn't like our WPA2 encryption followed by blind SSID's sooo.....
When I get back to work Monday I'm gonna load regular Ubuntu on the laptop to see if that makes any kind of difference, it shouldn't, but it might. If this still doesn't work, I may be forced to buy a bunch of Cat5 cable, which isn't to bad, but I wanted this to be a $0 cost project, so I'm gonna keep plugging away at the wireless. Also, if I'm forced to buy cabling, I'll be limited to 22 machines, as I only have 22 ports available to use in our switch. Guess I could always load XP on them, but I wanted these things to be as streamlined as possible.
ND40oz
04-03-2009, 11:33 PM
Just make an XP image for them, probably will only take an hour or two and then you can image each laptop and have it up and running in 10 to 15 minutes.
Baleful
04-03-2009, 11:47 PM
Yeah, Langer suggested N-Lite to strip down the image to it's bare state, I'll give that a whirl first thing Monday. Damn it feels good to work on projects like this at work, and get PAID for doing it!

In case some of you are looking closely, yeah that floor/room is fucking nasty. We've cleaned it countless times, but it's useless. That part of the building is very old, almost 100 years to be exact. The walls are made of a mix of concrete and plaster, and they suck in moisture very badly when it rains, which creates this weird furry, flakey shit on the plaster that turns to dust.... it's horrible, but we have a "server monkey" that works in there. My office is pretty nice :D.
ANYWAYS, this is 16 Lenovo Z61m laptops.
Specs:
Intel Celeron M 1.6Ghz
512 Mb RAM
Lol the rest sucks just as bad
I hope to have atleast 16 more hooked up within the next two weeks.
Oh, also a big thanks to Langer for turning me on to nlite (http://www.nliteos.com/). Using nlite, I was able to strip the OS ISO down to 200MB, installation on the master image machine took about 10 minutes.
Using ghost cast to image the rest of the machines took literally 8 minutes. 4 minutes to write the image to the server, then 4 minutes to write the image out to the other machines.

Thanks man. I hope to get some more up this summer. We've got a computer lab of about 30 dual core desktops that have never even been turned on :shake:. They are in a part of the building that doesn't have any network drops, so we need to buy wireless adapters for them. The wireless adapters would only cost like $700, but just like anything else, politics get in the way of this :shake:.

I suppose a bump again.
Will get WCG installed on my fileserver when I finally get it set up, although it will probably be lower spec than most of your scrap machines.
Might put together a really old machine tomorrow.

Up until last year, I still had an 800Mhz Celeron plunking along 24/7, only took it 19 hours to complete 1 WU
Any contribution is welcome, thanks for joining
Oh, and don't forget to get us some pics!

Thanks for all the responses guys, it was a cheap board i found on the egg when i first started for around $75 and picked it up. it has a crappy nVidia i570 chipset that runs hot as hell with the original heatsink, so i took one of the HR-05s that i got from Tom(thanks by the way) and threw it on, now the NB never goes over 38*C when passively cooling. I have an 8800GTS 640Mb i might end up throwing on it to replace the 6600GT
@Baleful - At the moment no, this board dosent have a very good overclocking system and always seems to lock up if i change the FSB so i've decided to leave it be. Plus with the stock intel HS its pushing around 63*C while crunching

And its also not like crunching with GPU Grid would have that much of an effect on WCG scores anyway. So theres no real reason not to. :) So get Crunching! :D
