8800 GTX SLI work on X58 Motherboards?

Just wondering. I read somewhere that SLI /crossfire only worked with 2XX and better GPUs for SLI. I hope this is not true.

I know that I ran my SLI'd GTX 8800's on my 780/790 boards and they worked great on the PCI-E 2.0 slots. Even though those cards are the lesser PCI-E spec, didn't cause an issue, but not sure if there's some strange difference on the X58 MB's.
