I was looking at the sites you guys recommended for parts for a pair of water blocks for my ati hd4870 1g's and all I could find were wb's for the 5800 series.
My question is will the 5800 series wb's fit my 4870's? I can't seem to find any info on it anywhere.
Thanks in advance guys.

Very doubtful they'll fit...but I don't use ATI gear, so not a definitive answer. Since the 4870 are rather old, you might have to look really hard for anyone carrying a block for them.

Not only that, but there were about 5 different designs, most of which were not compatible with the full cover blocks. If you have a reference design you're good to go, but at this point it doesn't make sense to spend that kind of money on an old card. Unless you can find some used ones cheap.

Are there any manufacturers out there that make custom blocks if I give them the specs? I have 4 of these cards and I love the performance but they get so hot that air just doesn't cut it. And since they are the best cards I have I really want to get the most I can out of them before they are toast.

The entire system (water) needs to cool the 955 phenomII and both ati cards. I'm not that concerned with the nb/sb or ram as they don't get hot enough to justify liquid but I know I can get alot more out of this system if I can cool it more effectively.

Go to the EK website and use their "configurator" or something like that. It will hopefully tell you which block works for your card.

I have a buddy with 2 4870 blocks up for sale, he would part with them cheap.
They fit the XFX 4870's

can you take pictures of your cards?? i can then tell you if they are refrence design and will fit waterblocks out there. but by you saying they are hot makes me think they are trefrence because the refrence design cards got real hot due to the voltage regulators and non refrence cards dont. do your cards have software voltage control?? via msi afterburner or gpu tool?? if so they are refrence but pitures of the front and back will tell me more

I have 2 sets
1st set: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102815 This is the set I'm currently using.

2nd set: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150395 This is the backup set.

There are 2 of each of these, matched pairs (sequential serials). I didn't feel like moving the tower just to snap a couple pics sorry. But this actually gives you more info to go on imo.

Just to clarify, the 1st link is the set actually in the tower and in use atm, the 2nd link is to the set I have on the bench as backups.

Just checkin in to see what you guys think. Are these in fact reference boards? (see above post for links to cards)
Also what is the best quality manufacturer of water blocks for my gpu's and cpu which is a phenomII 965 and a phenomII 955.

Jake and I will be fitting water blocks to my set of 4890's tomorrow. I'm only cooling them for starters and we will be taking pictures of course. Thank you for helping to make this possible!

This is my first wc build. I am cooling 2 ATI HD 4890's on an Asus Crosshair III mobo with an AMD 965 proc. I am only doing the video cards for now as budget limits prevent me from doing the proc yet.
I will be doing the proc eventually but my priority is these cards, they are stupid loud with the factory fans on them and I need to fix that.
I will be stripping the case completely and thoroughly cleaning everything before I begin the actual build.

Pics of the tear down and prep work.
The guts of the system. Prepping for cleaning

I will update as the build progresses. This is my first build so if you see me doing something wrong please let me know as I will need all the help I can get.
1 question for now, should the blocks be lapped before I install them or is the factory lap good enough?

I didnt think they needed it but I thought I'd ask just to be sure.

The entire case, inside and out as well as all internals are getting a thorough cleaning before anything gets installed.

Wow that's one dusty case. Yeah those 48xx ATI cards are damn space heaters. One 4870 was bad enough, then I made the mistake of cross-firing. They were 512mb to boot. Good spread of parts. Now for the best part, putting shit together. At least I think it is.
