So what is the big deal about rebranding old products? Nvidia does it all the time and people give them shit for it? I guess I missed something....

ati have been back since the 4800's... After the later Nvidia 8800's it did look over because there was no real ati alternative but they're back on it now....

My question was rhetorical because AMD announced that they will retire the ATI brand and focus on the new AMD Graphics brand.

If you check the picture of the new 6xxx card, you'll notice the sticker with the AMD instead of ATI.

It's a damn big card for a mainstream...

I am reaaaally curious to see the Antilles... according to those screens... Cayman XT is going to be around 300W TDP... close to GTX480 in TPD and temperature... So imagine Antilles being 2 Cayman Pro...

I never understood the whole draw towards 6 monitors ran from a single card arguement...

I mean seriously, what kind of shit game would you need to play with 6 monitors and still have acceptable frame rates?

If you aren't gaming with the 6 monitors then what the fuck are you doing with 6 monitors? Seriously, I can see people using two or three quite easily but 6? WTF could you possibly be doing to justify the need or cost of 6 monitors?

Why not just save the money you would spend on 3 of the monitors and invest in a second GPU to run in crossfire/SLI and be able to play games with respectable frame rates?

I swear AMD/ATI fanbois have simply lost their fucking minds.... :bird:

disapointed... when a new gpu series is realeased, i sure as fuck expect it to perform better than the series before, not way under it! prices and power might be low, but i want fucking performance!

The most any "average" home user will have is 2 and most only have one.

:bird: fuck thinking you need this card just because of this novelty

Investment Banking/Day Trading is a big market, but you also have other professions that benefit from mult-monitor setups, some types of engineering, architecture, graphic design, video editing, ect.

Yeah, I am a software engineer, I use two monitors at the most to do just about everything. I had three at one point but it was a waste of desk space.

How many of us here are investment bankers? And most SERIOUS graphics artists run MACs, just one of those things. So no 6 monitor setups for them..

Again, I don't see this as anything but a gimick...

6 monitors is a fucking joke. I would never be able to use more then one monitor. Its merely a gimmick, which has gotten a lot of people. For what I do, all i need is 1.

I've run 4 monitor setups before for work, a lot easier doing it with one card then buying two, especially if your stuck with a single PCIe x16 slot in most business computers.

It doesn't matter how many of us our investment bankers, the market is there and if you can get a card that does the same thing for cheaper then a matrox, then wouldn't you go that route? Heck 287k people have a subscription for a bloomberg terminal.

Yes, I can't see the need for a software engineer to run 3+ monitors, but other professions can take advantage of it. As for using a Mac, I'd argue that just about anything done on a Mac can be done PC, I don't care how "SERIOUS" you are. Adobe's products now run better on a PC anyway.

Heck even with me being a drafter I only use 2 screens at work.

For design work the Mac has historically been a mainstay due to the superior color representation on their monitors. Since the gap has been closed in recent years there is no reason why a Mac should be chosen over a PC. Yet, every design shop I have worked with or seen, including the one at my current firm uses Macs instead of PCs for design work. (none of which used 6 monitor setups)

Perhaps it is a status symbol or something, a throwback from years past. From a designer's perspective you may want to "show" your customers that you are, in fact, a serious designer when they visit your site. Showing a portfolio may only be half the job. I am sure having the customer see a bunch of Macs cluttered about your design group's shop helps push the notion that your shop means business. Like saying you are a pro gamer... it's probably more believable if you have a 30' monitor as opposed to a 21' monitor.

I think you hit the nail on the head with historically, people tend to stick with what they know. Especially if they need to change the OS and learn how to use a mouse with more then one button. :p

Floyd

You mean to tell me MACs only have one button?!
Having never even seen one let alone use one I dont know honestly.

ND40oz
10-22-2010, 02:34 PM
They've updated their mice over the years, but they have been pretty much one button affairs for a long time. The current one is multi-touch, it's actually pretty cool, but there's no way you'd want to game with it, since it's really just one big button with different ways to press/slide it.

nVidia is supposedly dropping the price on the GTX 460s and 470s. Supposedly a GF110 card may be released before the end of the year as well.

Here's a pair of 1GB 460s for $320 AR

Yeah, that's more a case of people sticking with what they know; the added status symbol that a Mac is for some people is just icing on the cake.

Also, :bird: ADOBE. The cunts got big because of how well they worked with the printing community, and after CS4 they basically told all their print service providers to fuck off.

I'm shure it will be nice cards performance of a 5850 for a cheap price.

The only thing they shouldn't have done is mixing up the name giving.

Atm is was so logical, but now ..., but if you look to the past, then it's not ununderstandable (regarding price of the former 4870 and 3870).

But I'll stick with my 5850 for a while (at least 'ntill the HD7000 or 8000 series)

Drivers of the ATi cards aren't that bad, that's something from the past, 'cause since I switched to ATi (AMD now :P) in summer 2008 with the outcome of the HD4870 I didn't have any problems, even 2 4870's a year later ran absolutely fine :)

0xygenthief
10-24-2010, 07:05 AM
4800 series had some of the worst drivers ever! In fact, the 4870 I owned prompted me to buy nvidia cuz I had so many issues.

I'll put it to you this way....

For a company to boast about how their cards can host 6 displays with a single card their previous generation had so many driver issues people, like me, couldn't host two monitors off of a single card. ATI/AMD drivers have always been shit.

The first thing that came to mind for using 6 monitors for me was for security cameras in high def. lol Alright, I lied. That was the second - the first being 6 monitors of porn.
