So I started my chiller build today, I will borrow my GF camera soon so I can have better pics, but for now you get crappy low light 3g iphone pics, I know it looks bad, but will hopefully get better pics tomorrow after work. So far I took AC unit apart and bent the evap almost all the way to where I want it. I noticed a really strange thing when I opened up the AC unit, The fan appears to have been broken and glued back together, see pics. I can't believe someone actually took the time to take the sucker apart other than me to glue a damn fan back together. Now I wonder if this unit was "refurbished" or the past owner broke it and glued it back together. Now I have a problem, because the glue that was holding it together, well lets say its no longer holding it together since I disassembled the unit and took pics. Any thoughts on what I should do? The fan motor seems really nice and has a smooth feel when I turn the shaft. But I'm not sure I can glue the fan blade back together like they did. The glue they used is bright yellow and was fairly smooth, didn't appear to leave 3d drips, all drips were flat, so the stuff must have not been a gel, but just pure liquid. Anyone know where I can get another fan blade setup. All I know about the air conditioner was that is a "hampton bay". Can't find a model number or anything. Thought about using 120mm fans, but I would need way to many to blow air over the entire thing.
Any tips + input + comments are welcome.

yea. definitely broken lol. you could try yanking one out of a similar size donor unit.

or build up a gang of 12v fans with and old psu to run them

Give me your fan motor shaft size, fan blade diameter, blade pitch, rotation (from shaft end), and I'll see what I can do for you. ;)

Thought about this, but I would need a lot of fans probably at least 9, and I would also have to make a big shroud.

Awesome! I will measure everything and post the specs when I get off work today. :D

FAN:
shaft: 5/16"
blade diameter: 10"
Pitch: 2.5"
Rotation: I'm not sure how to define it. if I look at the fan assembly from behind the motor (motor is front of me, further away is shaft, and furthest away is fan) then it has counter clockwise rotation.
EDIT: Found this fan, but not sure of material and pitch?

Havent heard, back so I tried gluing the fan back together. However, I must have misaligned, because now fan vibrates. I am not sure if this will even work now. Because if I leave the blower end off of the motor, the motor gets warm on the blower side... So either I will have to put on the blower and get a new blade, or live with lots of vibrations and watch my fans bearings die. Or get a different fan setup.
The evap gets cold, no idea how cold as I don't have a probe, but enough to get some ice around it, no blocks just coats of frost. In the 4-5 minutes I had it on.

looking at the pic seems to me thats a CW(clockwise) if thats the front of fan shown
if known the band and model of ac unit might able get a replacement fan from manufactor or repair jobber store http://www.appliancefactoryparts.com/search/partinfo.php?partsID=283381&modelsID=&typeName=air conditioner

Look at my paint skills, with a bad work monitor that I have to guess where my mouse is (not calibrated), but anyway heres the direction.

the green leaves is the fan, the brown block is the condensor, red is the motor.

note most all fan motors are dual shafted
on the condensor side the flow of air you want is fan draws air in and blows on the condensor and outward from unit to outside air while evap side draws in room air blows on evap
evap is the cold side and condensor is the hot side of AC

On this AC unit, before I ripped it apart. Room air is drawn in and passed through the evap back into the room to provide cool air, and I assume this also cooled this side the motor with the blower. THe other side as shown in the crappy picture I drew, draws air from outside and blows it over the condensor. The only reason I drew the picture was to show which way the fan rotates.

Can I use compression fittings for my tubing with a chiller, not for bling as they will probably be covered up with insulation, but for easy tubing removal?

Hey Scott, just noticed your reply. Ok I have your fan blade specs. Looks like you have a Clockwise Lead-End 10" dia fan blade. Not exactly sure what you mean by 2.5" pitch (pitch is measured in degrees) but no worries. I can find you a fan blade in the ballpark. I'll call the supply house this morning and PM you back this afternoon with what I find out. ;)

in fan blades and boat props the pitch means the fan will travel 2.5" of one complete turn of fan/prop. so in other words the gauge of load/drag on the motor sorta like you 10speed bike changing gears to suit stress

Anyone have any recomendations for 1366 block. I would assume I will need one without an O-ring?

That has an oring though so wont that cause problems at cold temperatures or with alcohol?

just a noob

Depends on how cold. Sub ambient no, below ambients maybe. Alcohol, not sure if it will(it's a solvent, so I imagine it would be rough on it). Acetone would definitely mess with it. If you really wanted to mess with the block, you could replace it with another material like Capt. suggests, or maybe even braze the block shut(not sure how the jet plate would do with no o-ring).

EIGHTLUG asked me to post this for him...
He found a fan for you.
Is it clockwise or counter-clockwise rotation that you need, from the shaft end?

Actually looks to me like u could use any simple air-circulator fans for this, although u won't be using the motor, but u could always use the blades, plus air-circulator fans are metal blades, no chance of them breaking
