As much as I applaud the effort in creating a dual-D5 top that isn't part of some shitty bay reservoir... this thing is a bit ugly. What's the function of the acrylic base?
looks pretty good I think

I like the Acetal version, though I'm like Morae, what purpose does the acrylic plate serve?

Fuk yes!!! Imagine some nice red coolant flowing through that window!
I'd rather that little window on the acetal version to be Red Acrylic, but it still looks VERY SICK.

Likely to seal that portion of it, just like the acrylic piece in the front..
looks wicked! But i too, would like to know what the acrylic bottom thingie is. some sort of mounting ?

05-25-2010, 07:05 PM
The acrylic plate's there to allow milling out the flow path between pumps. Some just glue it, or do it from the side where it isn't so noticeable. Now why they did it with acrylic and not POM must be for appearances and such.
At least that's my guess,

The acrylic strip looks to be for custom mounting. You could drop a countersunk screw on the inside and bolt it to...whatever. If you fuck it up, you don't ruin the whole top.
I like the idea. I bet you can expect swappable mounting systems for it too.
The freaky gaskets are an interesting idea. I might need to make some stuff based around a D5 gasket... Much as you guys hate UVpink, it will look good in Bloo if I upgrade the waterblock...
They need a black powdercoated D5 mounting collar now. One with the same knurling they use on the compression fittings.

Oh fuck and thanks for catching that...scratch that one off the list. Those stock rings look like shit on a after market D-5 top IMO. Add another 39.95 per pump to get it right, but would look slick as a muthfucker if you went whole hog on a setup.

If you use original Ring, you need to add one more acrylic we have included.

The biggest problem I have with this top is what Andy pointed out earlier. You have to buy the entire mod skirt from BP to get rid of that stock, bulky, screw on ring. For the price of all that I could buy another pump.

Yeah, for the price of two D5's, this top, and two BP pump skirts, you could just about get an Iwaki and 24V PSU...

They are high in price but i had paid $95.00 each for the EK D5 Dual tops i have now.:crack: I had used them and they were for this build. Two of them went to my other builds and one i am giving away in the WCG challenge.;) So i will replace them with the BP tops and pick up the BP dress kits also for this build. Should turn out nice! I hope they perform.:D

I realized one other unfortunate thing about this top: it's too wide to fit in any (stock) 5.25 bays, which to me would seem the most logical place to mount it, or?
I'm sure other places will work too, but would have been nice if it was < ~150mm wide, but then I'm guessing the pump rings wouldn't have fit on there.

A D5 Vario costs $77 here so the top costs 20% more than a pump.. In perspective it would be equivalent of you paying $185 for the top.

Agreed ... if I see some performance increases with the Dual top when compared to a ghetto setup, I'd be more tempted.
Pump - $ 77.00
Dress Kit - $ 40.00 ( x2 ) - $ 80.00
Dual Top - $ 92.00
Total per set - $ 249.00
Iwaki RD-30 - $ 205.00
Power Supply - $ 65.00
Total - $ 270.00
I'd go Iwaki at that rate.

I would try the Iwaki but so far all the talk i have seen on the forum makes it sound like alot work to loop it in with all the suction/pressure it has. I have no clue on what i would need to make it work without having problems! I would rather spend the money on something thats not going to suck my system inside out!!! :D

At US rates:
I have 4x D5s ($77 each). 4x BP mod kits ($40 each). 4x BP tops ($40 each). What you're saying is that these new dualtops would cost me on average, $7.50 more per pump. The difference is chump-change.

I agree, And for me it is something i know how to use. And i already own the pumps! I'm not sure i personal want to go a single loop with all this hardware vs. my idea of the triple loops. So far it sounds like a hell of alot of work to make the RD30 work in a loop. I am open to the idea if i can find some good info on setting a loop up with an RD30! I have seen a few members back out do to the complex nature of that pump. It looks to be one hell of a monster!!!

When BP makes a dress kit for the RD-30, or Watercool makes a silencer for it, I'll be interested. At the moment I'd have to mount the Iwaki outside and run tubing through a wall to manage its noise. And from what I hear, only a 5-gallon bucket is a sufficient reservoir to cope with its thirst. Power ain't a problem though, I can tap that right from the wall.

Originally I wasn't sold on this dual top, based on looks. But now I've reconsidered. Two of these would greatly simplify my build. So count me in for two in delrin.
John, one last comment, then I'll let the issue of price rest. Fittings. I'm using comps, and the old version BP top. Two pumps takes 4x comps, 4x stops. This dual-top requires only two of each. That easily makes up the $15 difference.

Yeah, so... I got my dual tops and assembled them. They look great. But I've run into a little thing I'm not sure about:
How do you mount these dual tops to your case?
The original D5, and BP mod tops, both included stands you could simply bolt to the case. These dual tops don't come with anything but threaded holes in their sides. The other brackets can't be used.
Has BP made a stand for these things that I don't know about, or am I gonna have to make some stands myself? The latter is no problem, really, but I guarantee that my work won't match the design scheme of the tops.

Chances are that its been designed to be mounted in a 5 1/4 bay and thats what the holes in the sides are for etc

Not possible. The outer dimension of the top is 160mm/6.3". The widest dimension with pumps installed is 175mm/6.9". This is using the BP pump covers though, so I imagine stock D5 rears would be a little larger still.
These are designed for cellars, not bays.

Morae
09-12-2010, 02:52 PM
The two bottom plates have different thicknesses: one if you have the dress up kits, or one for if you use the stock plastic pump housing. These allow the bottoms of the pump housing ring to rest flat on a surface. There are three screws in the plates. Mounted to 1 or 2mm material, they're good for securing the pumps to a solid surface. I'm using wood though, so I simply used longer screws.
In your situation I'd just cut a flat piece of alu, secure the pumps to it, and secure that to the rad.

DB heres l3p's build log (http://www.realredraider.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=34946) :up:thanks! I have a totally different desk build planned for someday. Will be an improvement of that one Danger Den did for the Popular Mechanics article (this one will focus on radical water-cooling).
You got a link of that ? :)
I found it Popular Mechanics Desk PC (http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/how-to/build-pc/4318067)
