View Full Version : [Rumour] Nvidia Geforce GTX 400 set for extremely thin availability

RRbot
04-08-2010, 05:50 PM
No one expects either the Nvidia Geforce GTX 470 or the GTX 480 to be available in any significant quantity come 12th April. Even optimistic rumours have placed the worldwide availability at 30,000 units. Nvidia themselves informed reviewers that the GTX 400 products will be available in >10000 units.

SemiAccurate, who have been accurate with most information regarding to Fermi/GF100, are now claiming the actual quantity is way lower. Even lower than their initial expectation of 8,000 units.

I'd say this is more than accurate.

Did anyone on here actually manage to buy a GTX 480 or 470 in the last couple of days since they became available?

I waited all day at work yesterday seeing if the EVGA 480 would come back in stock but it never did. Ones that do become available disappear in like 5 seconds. I got an in stock e-mail from EVGA for the 480 SC yesterday, and by the time I could click the link to look at the page it was already out of stock. Others brands/models weren't even lasting more than like 5 or 6 minutes.

Craziness. Seems yields are pretty shitty if the supply is that limited right now.

Yeah ketzer I had the same problems yesterday, the only ones that lasted more than a quick refresh or click of the buy it button were the SC editions of 470gtx's, not what I wanted........

EVGA 480GTX $749 AUD (approx 694.80 USD) avalible on preorder if you still want one or two

pccasegear link (http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=13983)

If you still really really want them you can ask them if they have any more avalible for pre-order in the feed back box at the bottom of the page. If they do and you are willing to pay that much (I assume they are cheaper in the US) pm me and you can post them to me and I'll ship them over to you (they dont ship internationally). you will have to pay for shipping of course.

When I checked Newegg yesterday around lunch time, the only thing left was a Galaxy 480, 5 minutes later it was gone as well.

I'll wait for the Fermi refresh before I buy in.

Well, I guess it makes it a little better I wasn't the only one fukkin pissed off about it yesterday then.

I wouldn't care so much if I wasn't trying to finish a new build by May 22nd for the LAN party, but after watching this BS the last couple of days, I'm not having much confidence that there will be any better supply of cards before then. And to top it off I sold all the 5870s I did have thinking I would pick up some 480s.

I'm half considering instead now picking up a couple of Eyefinity6 5870s as a temporary solution, but fuck I don't want to deal with ATI's drivers :bird:

The availability thing is BS. Inno3D, Zotac and EVGA released pictures showing assloads of cards. They've been selling crazy fast and Pre-Orders have been going fast. I think Charlie's forgot that ATI also had thin as fluff availability when the cards released. :shake:

Well, I did find them in stock at Tiger under the Galaxy brand name. Never really heard of Galaxy, so looked them up on the web and gave their tech support line a call just to get a feel for the way they do business. Got a recording that said "leave a message, and we'll call back within an hour"......hmmmm....let me think about that for a second before I make up my mind......oh yeah!

How do you go about getting them to price match someone?

I usually wait close to the 30 day window and call them stating they're cheaper somewhere else. They look it up, and issue the credit ASAP unlike Egg who are total pricks about shit like that.

Remember back when the GTX 280's hit the scene and the GPU vendors jacked up the price, then dropped it 2 weeks later by 200.00. Fucking New Egg were total assholes about it and wouldn't give me the difference until I threw a fit and spoke with every manager they had. I ended up getting only partial credit.

I bought the 2 GTX 295's from Tiger and the same thing happened again. But Tiger never blinked an eye an issued a credit with no hassle. They've always been much better to deal with than New Egg, but New Egg usually has better pricing and selection.

Just like anything else....there's lots of ways to work with vendors to get deals as long as your more committed to that, than throwing fits and bitching.

Yeah...funny you mention that because I just saw that site via EVGA.com and they're out now too. Just blind luck on my part finding two of those EVGA cards, because I wasn't about to get any other brand. I learned my lesson with the two BFG GTX 295's I bought and then sold. Took me over 2 months to get another one RMA'd from those assholes.

From now on, it's either EVGA or nothing for me as far as GPU cards go.

haha Tell me about it. I have 5 tabs in my Firefox browser that are dedicated just to the pages for the listings of 480 SCs on EVGA's site, Newegg, Mwave, Tigerdirect, and Zipzoomfly. Cant wait to see your numbers. HWC just did a 470 SLI review and nothing to write home about. In almost every high res test 5850 crossfire beat them in the rest they were within 5-7 frames.

Seems like you really have to go 480 to make it worth it. I have to admit it seems like ATi is getting their shit together with crossfire, slowly but surely now they need to work out the rest of the driver elements.

Agreed, but it seems they are getting there now, performance of the drivers wise (still get a lot of bus)

but when I look at the benchmarks, then see that the price of the 5850 is $50 cheaper I say ATi has won the lower high end, at least for the time being. For crossfire that is a cool $100 bucks in your pocket for the same performance.

$100 isn't much money, but in my mind with no real difference in performance it seems a waste.

Still, got to wait for the 485 vs 5890 in my mind.

You mutha fuckers can have your ATI cards. I've got several 4870's, a 4850, and a 5770 and can tell you right now, driver and GAME support fucking blows. Once they do get their shit together, they are decent cards - but at what price? The level of frustration that you have to put up with when it comes to driver/game support is a total deal breaker for me.

I'll be buying some new cards, but it won't be anymore ATI cards.

I can wait. No need dropping cash on Nvidia when I wouldn't be able to SLI what I get now with what I get later, rather go with low end (or 5850) ATi so either don't waste what much money if I go green and if I stat red I can crossfire it with whatever comes out.

That is one thing I have to hand to ATI, allowing you to step up without your old card becoming a paperweight.

Haven't had a single problem with my 4870x2. The experiences I've had with nVidia and ATI has ATI on top, in terms of hardware reliability and driver support. Sorry to hear about your troubles anyway.
