WD is preparing its updated VelociRaptor HDD for launch. Ideal for enthusiast systems, workstations, and low-end servers, the 2.5” 10,000 RPM HDD has 32MB of onboard cache memory, a SATA III interface, a MTBF of 1,400,000 hours, 3ms latency, and supports continuous transfer rates of up to 145 Mb/s. Available in 150Gb, 300Gb, 450Gb and 600Gb capacities, the new VelociRaptor is bundled with a 3.5” IcePack mounting frame with an integrated heatsink. Pricing has not been announced yet but it is expected to start shipping by June 2010

Someone should come out with a stackable waterblock design for this... Maybe a job for IandH?

Hopefully they fixed the heatsink on these updated models. I ran into an issue with my Velos, where the sinks were just a bit thicker than a normal 3.5" drive, and they would not fit into my pre-slotted cage. I ended up buying Scythe HDD anti-vib kits, cutting them down, and mounting the drives horizontal.
yup. ill be all over theese:D

Yay!! I love paying engrossed prices for a Hard Drive
I can finally get into my games slightly faster than my friends xD

thas the same heatsink mine has, different from earlier veloci's, people are saying the drives get hot mine never goes over 39c ever

mine never goes over 39c ever
Mine average 35c-38c
I won't be upgrading my current velraptors over these "updated" ones. If I upgrade storage it'll be with SSDs.

me either thinking about grabbing another Vrap for raid but thats all. but i can find a 300HLFS all the ones I find lately for sale are 300GLFS and last I knew you cant raid with different model hdd's same driver just different model number and I wont take a $200 risk cant afford to.

Once 25nm flash is out and widely available unless you are just against SSD's there won't be much reason for these. Unless they are cheaper then the old raptors.
the GB to price is expected to drop down to more reasonable levels and with a 500 and 600GB SSDs already set to come out these don't even have the storage storage anymore.

true. my problem with ssd's is the price per gigabyte. I watch and download shit tons of movies have almost 2 TB full. but they do go on se[erate storage than my o/s but still I cant see paying 200 for 60gb as apposed to 200 for 300gb

Signs are pointing to prices being roughly cut up to 25% with both the drop to 25nm and the fact new plants were opened to crank them out. Of course that is only once a good number of drives are out to combat supply and demand (since Intel will likely be first to show with a X25 G3)
Hey guys I have a few questions about HDDs drives SATA II/III and USB 3.0 (tad on/off topic)
Okay here's my understanding (or misunderstanding :p)
I am wanting to know what will happen to SATA II HDDs
I was thinking that I could use my Samsung F1 1TB SATA II HDD in a external USB 3.0 and think that it would be as fast as USB 3.0 could go? Or would a newer SATA III HDD with USB 3.0 be faster as an external HDD?
And why aren't laptop manufactures making laptops with SATA III and USB 3.0 yet? are they just trying to make people buy one now and upgrade again later on?
@ ablatman I did start designing a block that cooled two HDDs facing opposite each other.

A bunch of people have done that already...
What I'm thinking design wise would almost work as a res....

The whole Sata II/III thing is just bullcrap in my opinion cause even on the new article of the WD Velociraptor, ur looking at transfers of 145Mb/s which is pretty generous. Sata II and III are set at 3 and 6 Gb/s each so ur not even close to being bottlenecked in terms of connection.
In regards to USB, USB 2.0 is good for around 57-60 Mb/s and 3.0 is around 570ish.
So in all i don't really see a reason to go with Sata II over III in regard to HDs, but for USB, 2.0 will probably be a bottleneck.
As for it not being in laptops, its probably because its sort of "fake" atm. Many USB 3 and Sata III controllers use the PCIE lanes on the mobo so they're trying not to implement it in laptops.
Then again, all this could just be false :D

I'm pretty sure only ssds (and currently only some of them) will be able to use all the bandwidth that Sata III can provide.

okay thanks Silverion for the info

By the time HDD can use Sata III bandwidth I believe SSD's will be far cheaper, easier to get, faster then they are now and in much larger sizes. As it stands there is a 600GB coming out, by the end of next year we will likely see 1TB for close to it and prices to be in most people's budgets by the following year.
This is one of the new leaps in tech I have seen in a long time were I can confidently say it will replace its older model soon. At least in the home and workstation use, servers are another story. Soon might be five years but when switching technologies completely that isn't that long.

Dude, you also have to take a little something called *overhead* into account. I don't know about SATA, but I know that USB has a FUCKTON of overhead that Firewire doesn't. There's a reason Firewire 400 is FASTER than USB 2 -- OVERHEAD.
When you break it down, SATA II can theoretically do up to about 375MB/s per channel; USB III is double that (750MB/s). Just because a drive can do ~150 (I'll be generous) on SATA III doesn't mean that it will do that well on SATA III, or even close to that well on SATA I. It really all comes down to the amount inherent overhead, and the amount of overhead added by the motherboard/add-in card's SATA controller, and the controller board on the drive itself....
I'm not saying that these drives will perform any faster or slower on SATA II vs SATA III, just that it's better in my opinion to have more bandwidth available whenever possible (Hell, for an additional 2 USD a month I got a 5/20 mb/s boost to my connection speeds last week). Another thing to consider for performance would be how fast you can read/write to and from the drive's onboard cache and the system RAM -- if it can saturate the connection, then that has the potentially to improve performance in day-to-day stuff....
