That mobo would look KILLER in my rig! Too bad it would cost about 600 bucks to jump up to that socket.
And im assuming you put the HK on there 90* off because of the caps?
Marne
03-10-2010, 06:12 AM
yes floyd that is why he did it. i had to do the same for mine. someone i forgot who managed to do it with this board and keep it up right but honestly i like the 90* offset

I couldnt handle it. My mild OCD is flaring up seeing the text on that block face the wrong way!

Okay small update for tonight...
I'm changing my Sunbeam Rheobux Extremes over from cheap-pc blue to white. LEDS came today so I did one. The other two will be here tomorrow...

Replacing these...

With these... (3mm white)

Halfway through...
http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff228/slpdLoad/P1030085.jpg
Went fairly smoothly, but I'll be damned if I can convince my camera to take a good picture of it. It's white I swear haha. In person it looks fantastic, I'll get some better shots when I have all three in the drive bays...
http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff228/slpdLoad/P1030094.jpg
http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff228/slpdLoad/P1030103.jpg
Other goodies that came... I have a Silverstone ST850 coming tomorrow so I can start creating cables (it's fully modular)
http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff228/slpdLoad/P1030104.jpg
I also played with hard-piping the connections on my motherboard. This works, but I need to order some more BP parts to replace the Feser SLI connector...
http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff228/slpdLoad/P1030107.jpg
I emailed Gary to find out what he uses to hardpipe the connection from the EK waterblock to a Heatkiller since he's got the EVGA LE posted now, so hopefully I'll be able to do a direct connection for that as well...

Great minds think alike and fools seldom differ :D
I'm loving building in this case so far.
A word to the wise about doing custom wiring with the Silverstone Strider series: They put 2200uF capacitors on the PCIe cables, which are presumably an important part of the design - ripple suppression and all that.
I'm trying different things now - I think my solution will be to add them somewhere on the new custom cables, but someplace where I can hide them. Hopefully moving them away from the connectors won't introduce too much noise.
I'll post pics of what I mean and what I end up with of course.

Take it from someone that COMPLETELY rewired his PSU. Its great and makes the build unique but takes forever! Im in the process of re-doing mine right now and getting rid of my patches that I had to do when I moved to the new case.

Nice start to your build ... Is there a combination of bitspower fittings that you could use instead of using the SLI fitting going from the GPU to the MB block. Im not saying it looks bad just I think it could match better if all BP fittings are used. Also the white led's look bad ass...

Oh I completely agree with you. I think it looks terrible haha. It was just a proof of concept to make sure I could get the ports to line up. Another 1" DPlug + some extenders and I should be set.

Yeah, that's all I had, so it's what I used. I may replace part of it with a proper snake of some sort. I think another extender + a 1" DPlug and it will work.
Gary was OOS on one of the 90 degree snakes that he normally uses, so he's looking into what parts will work. I'll be sure to post what I order for this.

What is the difference between the original EVGA X58 board and the LE version? If I'm going to move to X58 I might as well save some money, but I don't know the difference...
slpdLoad
03-26-2010, 12:56 AM
The regular X58 is "better" on paper. LE is below it.
Few things that the 58 full version has:
16/16/8/8 vs 16/8/4/8 PCI
More SATA ports
Active chipset cooling vs passive (LE's cooling sucks)
Dual Ethernet
For me, the LE gave me a better price, the color scheme I wanted, and the availability of a fullcover block. Still has a lot of cool EVGA features.

I must have been more tired yesterday than I thought, because rev B shown below works perfectly as well. No stress on any parts, all are fully connected.
Word to the wise, pick the block orientation you want to use, mount it fully with all hardware, and then try to find fitting combinations, not the other way around.

Next I'll try mostly 45s. Still looks a bit too much like a crazy straw :p
-------------
Some other things that are happening with this build:
-Found a third, matching XFX 4870 1GB on fleabay, will get matching EK block for it. I'm hoping around the time that all comes together, EK will have their GPU multi-link (looks like the Heatkiller link) out, and I can order one. :crack:
-Waiting on some capacitors from Mouser to complete the PCIe cables, which are done except for that.
-Will be ordering a Silverstone ST1000 and returning the 850watt, to give some more headroom with 3GPUs
- Been working on rewiring all 18 fans so far.
- Pedestal will be done soon, with fans, pumps, and rads
- Still deciding on using slot loading drives. I have two drives, and the following bracket I stole from my Master Kaze controller. Still haven't worked out the mounting and what to use to cut out a faceplate.

The first revision of the E758 was pretty ugly (black, green, blue, white, and red) although the newer version is a LOT more like the LE -- mostly black and gray with the exception of the J-Micron SATA ports which are still red. In all it looks a LOT better than the first revision (I just opened my current-rev one within the last minute).
The LE is still a better price, and the "fewer SATA ports" bit isn't really an issue IMO as the "extra" ones that the 758 has are on a mediocre J-Micron controller....
The other issue of waterblocks is another big consideration because the only waterblocks that I'd use on a 758 are the EK set or the MIPS set -- the BP set doesn't cover a few of the mosfets/vregs that are under the stock NB cooler....

If I keep the spacing equal, which I intend to, I'll have the third card in a 4x slot, which will knock the performance down somewhat. Should still help out a bit, but going to 3 cards was more about looking cool and something I wanted to do, and only a little about the performance improvement.
