As the title states, I'm in the market for some headphones...
Main criteria is heavy bass, clean mids, clean highs...
My son likes dance/techno/hip hop/rock
I will give some members a preemptive :bird:
I'm considering these...
Beats - Studio (http://beatsbydre.com/products/Products.aspx?pid=B3808)
or these when they are released...
Beats - Spin (http://beatsbydre.com/products/Products.aspx?pid=B5616)
throw out some suggestions that fit my criteria bitches...:crack:

"Beats by Dre"??? What kind of ghetto :kfc: bullshit is this? Fuck that bullshit, be a big boy and get some real phones.
Stick with names like Grado, AudioTechnica, and Sennheiser.
Whats your budget?
Oh, and :bird: Monster and all their bullshit products.

I've got a set of HD212's -- they're a bit on the cheap side, and they're not really circumaural, but they're a decent set on the budget side of things (I've seen them go for 40-65 USD depending on the retailer and how good the sale was), and they're heavy on the bass. They're great for metal/techno/etc. when you're on the go and don't want to have to worry about fucking up a really expensive pair.

If it's for your son, I honestly don't think he'll give a shit about the sound quality. I think he'd just prefer the headphones that he wants. Also, where is he planning to use the headphones mostly (mainly considering how robust they need to be, or how light)?

Well, he isn't your 'typical' 11 year old. He has a discerning ear and eye. Remember he has been raised listening to my Martin Logan Electrostats. I've taught him how to be a critical listener.
I will be using these as well. Mostly in the car and at home, also on airplanes. Like I said, nice deep/clean bass is a vital feature.
To answer you're question, he wants the Beats by Dre...:crack:
budget... $300-$350

"Beats by Dre" is nothing more than some gimmicky bullshit. It's just like a Mac, the outside case looks nice and pretty but on the inside it's just some basic hardware that you end up paying a premium for just for some marketing bullshit.
While the "Beats by Dre" may not sound bad, I doubt they will have ground to stand on when compared to other $350 phones.
I stand by my Audio Technicas. I havn't tried the others so I can't truly speak on their quality, but the Audio Technicas are top notch.

Personally, that genre seems to describe a good pair of Ultrasones.
They're definitely good for Techno, hip-hop, rock....plus they're low impedance so no amp is required. I think something like the HFI-780 would be good.
If u want some great "fun" headphones, the DT770s would be my next bet but ud need an amp to go with it which i doubt u'll want.
Also, remember to stick with closed options seeing he'll be wearing this in public. Theres also some IEM options as well if need be.
Drop the fucking beats...pos

I'm sure he's a smart kid, and you've taught him well, but half the fun of getting something at that age is telling your friends about it. If he came right out and said he wanted Beats, it's because he thinks they're cooler. It's like the iPod. Sure there's a hundred better and cheaper MP3 players out there, but fuck buying anything else.

No amps here...
They will be used, almost exclusively, with his 64GB iTouch 3rd Generation...:crack:

Definitely speaks ultrasone to me.
Good bass, clean sound...no amp, all closed design
Also, do be cautious....high valuables in a small package are....very...desirable (to put it simple)
$250 floating around school can be bad...i would kno.

You are correct, he enjoys giving his friends the 'tour of technology' that he and I have at my house. I guess next year I'll have a new bunch of tourist, since he will meet new friends in Junior High...

Theyre some of the best ull get in that sort of package.
Only thing that can beat them imo is probably the DTs or Denons which all use amps pretty much. U could try the DT Pro 80s, but those aren't exactly high end.
Ultrasone 780s (http://www.amazon.com/Ultrasone-HFI-780-Surround-Professional-Headphones/dp/B00101XVH2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1265924965&sr=1-1)
The most amazing phones i've ever listened too are the Grado's. Super clear sound, and deep bas like your wanted red.
And like Bale was sayin, the Beats by Dre are gimmicky, put them next to the other phones people are recommending here and you'll definitely want something different.

Ew that just destroys the sound...im fine with mine, but then again i used AKG K27is which had so much pressure that the Grados are actually comfortable now xD

Well the only way I can see trying different headphones is actually buying them. That isn't going to be happening. This weekend I plan on seeing if Modia has headphones available for demo'ing.
Having posted all that, LowBrowser was spot on. Drew has listened to the Beats - Studio and if the Beats - Spin do not release before our trip to Washington, he has informed me he wants the Studios. It's a status thing with him I believe.
I just might buy me a pair of the headphones Silverion linked, though I need to do more research on them.
Thanks everyone for your input, Drew is set I believe, but I'm still undecided for myself...

Those Ultrasones you linked Silverion, all I've read about them is how shitty they fit you're head. Lots of complaints that they hurt your head to listen to them and your ears sweat. They have 'pleather' on the headband and earcups. Seems like you have to spend @$250 on the headphones, then you have to rig up new padding for the headband, then buy new earcups. Kinda bullshit, IMO, regardless of how the fuck good they sound. That is considered a ripoff, IMO...

well for 1 I can contest that many will account for headphones that "hurt". Pressure or just straight discomfort happens all the time (like Grados are not known for comfort). If you want "comfy", ur looking at ATs, Beyerdynamic or Denon but most of those will require amping or have open designs (common choice for Audio Technicas). Closed headphones like the Ultrasones want to put pressure on your ears to help reduce ambient noise. An opposite viewpoint is something like Denon which are still closed, but many comment about how they still leak sound. Its a compromise on design. Same thing for sweating. Lots of closed headphones, whether pleather or leather will make your ears sweat. Sort of what happens when u enclose your ears in a bubble of heated air.
Also pleather is a commonly used material compared to real leather. Beyer offers pleather pads. Most ATs come with pleather...hell my little portable AKGs are also pleather...

And yea...definitely look there. I kno some stuff, but those guys know everything about that stuff. Search is good for specifics like "headphones for rap/hip-hop" etc.
and don't be afraid to ask in general after u do some reading!

The constant smile on his face is worth it.:)
I did get a 20% discount, which lessened my buyers remorse a bit.

I'm surprised no one mentioned a pair of Denons... Also if you really wanted something awesome, you should check out the Sennheiser HD850. Dayumm... :coke:

and theres a reason y no one suggested them as well as the Denons, Red specifically stated he didn't want an amp

lol sry, looks good.......
ok, wtf did he do to his ipod?!
Edit: Also red, if ur still looking, I also heard good things about the older HFI-680s. Fwir recently, theyre similar to the 780s (possibly the same driver), but some consider them a little more refined. Better mids, more "refined" bass...etc.
