Is there anything to gain by using HDMI cables over DVI cables for monitors? I will never watch anything HD, just wondering if HDMI cables offer any kind of performance gains over regular DVI. All I use my monitors for are work and gaming.

Doing a little research I've found that HDMI (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI#Versions) offers significant bandwidth increases over DVI. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Visual_Interface#Specifications)

Will this increase in bandwidth offer any noticeable gains?

I prefer HDMI. :king:

If your not using the cable to transfer audio/video, then there is no gain.

Again, I use all Monster Cable M1000...

I easily have a few grand in Home Audio Cableing...

It also depend on video cards, not all cards can support audio thru hdmi. In this case a HDMI-DVI cable is better.

This is what I picked myself with the 8800GTS 640MB and having a separate cable for audio.

The videocard in use is a 4870. The monitors in use are these (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824001263&Tpk=Samsung%202493hm).

I didn't think there would really be any noticeable gain for what I do, but I found this site (http://www.monoprice.com/home/index.asp) yesterday and OMG they offer great prices on cabling, connectors, and adapters.

Monoprice is indeed a great place to shop. I ordered all my cables in this place, along with some networking stuff to outfit my condo with wall jacks.

All that needs to be said about it has been said, apparently. If you have an HD 3 or 4 series, and an HDTV you are outputting to, run HDMI, otherwise, it's no big diff.

any monitor i buy now must have the HDMI inputs or I don/t buy it
running in HDMI out of the 4870 & 4870X2 & even 3870 in HDMI looks sooo much better you have to set the monitors up as HDMI in their settings & also go into the ATI Catalyst control center & set the HDMI settings on but is WAY better eye candy & the streaming Vids from the New sites in HD look awesome

Placing the order now. I'll report back when I get the cables in and get everything tightened up.

(Might be a week or two, I have to go through the process of getting the order approved, getting a PO faxed to monoprice, then get the check cut. Then I get the cables lol)

Quick nub question, I'm looking at getting these cables instead of just regular HDMI cables, any reason they shouldn't work? I won't need anything special to make them work will I?

HDMI tends to have more jitter than DVI. If you hook up your blu-ray through HDMI then through component video you will see the video looks a little better and because the DVI does not have audio going through it the is less of a chance of crosstalk. the only reason to use HDMI over DVI is the audio if your monitor supports HDMI 1.3a or better if not use DVI. hope that helps. if you need more clarification feel free to ask
