View Full Version : Am I going to have enough juice for tri-SLI?

My system is in my sig.

My planned upgrade is tri-SLI GTX 285s for a gaming and folding monster, but it looks like I might not have enough juice for three cards.

My watercooling consists of 2 loops with 6 Scythe fans and two MCP655 pumps. I was thinking about adding a third pump for a small chipset loop, but that might not be on the cards now if my PSU isn't up to the task of tri-SLI.

Am I doomed to regular SLI? :(

It's not just about the amount of juice its also the quality of the signal.

When I had tri-SLi I had to run 2 1200watt PSUs on separate power conditioners to get it stable. Eventually I got evga to trade my 3x9800gtx's in for 2xgtx280 ssc's.

Well, the quality of the signal with this PSU is top-notch. Highly rated by all the testers (HWC, [H], Johnny Guru)

But I'm worried that once I set the rig to folding on the GPUs and crunching on the CPU with some overclocking I might be screwed for power.

i run WAAAAAAY more than that on my 860watt pc power and cooling. you just need a high quality psu.

Well, this PSU is good quality.

My issue is that I'm also going to be folding and overclocking, so things will be running under heavy load 24/7.

I guess I could try it and if it doesn't work, I could sell one of the cards.

I ran 2 silverstone zeus units and my issue was my old house - the power wasn't clean enough coming in.

That could be...my house has terrible wiring.

Corsair HX1000 ? You will have enough juice to run all 3. Hell, I know of a folder who ran 3x9800GX2 with a Corsair TX750 without issues.

Well, I'm going to go for it.

If it doesn't work out, I'll sell one of the cards :D

I ran QuadFire off my PCP&C 750 Silencer. I also ran 8800 GTS SLi off my Corsair HX520.

My buddy ran tri-sli GTX280's all OC'ed on a PCP&C 850W... I don't see why you could run tri-sli GTX285's on a 1000w.

BTW, the rest of my buddy's system was VERY power hungry too, 6GB corsair, k7 965 extreme (OC'ed), two full watercooling loops, fans galore..... You should be fine.

Jack,

Don't worry. My opinion is that you would be far from troubled. Its a quality PSU. There are also more quality PSUs that force you to make trade offs, like noise level. This one's a quality product for sure, so don't fret over it. Don't go by the wattage rating. Its meaningless.

I may switch over to two of these for my next machine, although I still have yet to get used to modular cables.
