Well, I have some money coming in January. Going to buy a nice Digital SLR, i7, BloodRage, 3x2GB DDR3, Dwyer 477 or 490, King Instruments 7520....;)

Then taxes in February/March for more goodies...:king:

My wife has a D-80 and it's incredible, I use a older D-50. The main difference is the 80 can use any Nikor lenses with a the current f-mount, AF or not. Better metering is the other main advantage with a few more features.

I'm no expert by any means, but that's what I've been able to learn about the two camera's. By the way, you can get a kit with the two VR lenses, 18-55 and 55-200. Nikor VR's are really nice lenses, stabilizes the image. I just got her the 70-300 VR lense for Christmas, and it's spectacular. Nothing beats a Nikor lense as far as I'm concerned, but again I'm no camera buff.

RR, mcoffey pretty much said it. Those are the main advantages.

Also, I believe the D80 has a little bit better grips and it's more comfortable in your hands than the D60/D50.

Go D80, that kit mcoffey mentioned is Great too. ;)
Doooo it. Doooo it. Doooooooo it.

The D80 like mcoffey said has the what photographers like to call screwdriver, it means you can use any lens, even the older lens, which doesn't have the AF engine inside it.
D80 as far as I know got a little bit better sensor.
And if you could afford, go buy the D90 it's got newer sensor, a little bit better metering over D80.

Check out the D90, or if you REALLY want to get a good camera, that can do some high ISOs then its D700.

I have a D300, 18-200 and 14-24 lenses. The 18-200 is a fantastic lens, basically the only one you need! I would not recommend the D300 today since the D90 is basically the same camera, but cheaper.

Check this guy out: www.kenrockwell.com. He's got tests of so much gear and I like his view on things: it should be useable and worth the money, not just bling or overpriced crap. He still say that the old D40 is the best budget SLR available, how about that? Here is his recommended cameras: http://kenrockwell.com/tech/recommended-cameras.htm

Best of luck and remember, with the D90 you can record short clips of those marvelous builds you have so the world can watch them bubbling away on youtube ;)

The D80 gives you bracketing, the ability to use Nikkor AF lenses (as opposed to only AF-S lenses), better build and grip, etc., all things the D60 does not have.

Oh, and for the record, Ken Rockwell is a joke.

Well I've decided on the Nikon D90...:)

Here is what I plan to buy next week...

Nikon D90
Nikon 70-300mm AF-S VRII
Nikon 18-55mm AF-S VR
SanDisc Extreme III SDHC
Camera Bag

I'll be starting a thread to gather opinions on a macro lens... Right now I'm leaning towards the Nikon 105mm VR..;)

Dang Red, when you are in for buying something big, YOU GO BIG.
Holy crap!! Very nice choices, seems like you've been doing some homework. ;)

BTW, my suggestion on camera chip, get the SanDisc Extreme III 16GB, my dad and I both have one, they are the fastest things we've ever used, and store a ton of pictures, I've taken 7,200+ since last summer and STILL haven't filled up the chip (and these are 3-6MB large red pictures).

Also, with lenses, when you start to take pictures more and more, you will realize that it's not very fun to carry around 2-3 lenses wherever you go.
You might look into switching that 18-55mm out for the:

Nikon 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6G ED IF Autofocus VR (http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-24-120mm-3-5-5-6G-Autofocus-Nikkor/dp/B00009VQG6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1235230635&sr=8-2)

The reason I suggest this is because it's a lens with more variety of uses, close ups (macro), outside landscapes and portraits (ideal portrait is at 100-110mm).
You'll find it easier to carry around this lens then having to switch from the 55 to the 70-300 all the time.
As you know I have a Canon and three lenses:

24-70mm f/2.8 L USM
70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM
24-135mm f/3.5 IS
(all lenses made by canon)

Out of those three, I use the 24-135 the most, it's lightweight, and very convenient with it's variety of uses.
However if I want some fast action stuff, maybe wild life or sports, the 70-200 is amazing.
I use the 24-70 for indoor pictures of all my computer parts, some macro stuff, with lightbox and other lighting...

Oh and I also have a 2x Multiplier for the 70-200 tele... 400mm for sports (soccer with my buddys) is AMAZING.

Once you go DSLR, you never look back.

Nikon 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6G ED IF Autofocus VR

.

I disagree with a 24mm low end for a crop camera. Not wide enough with the 1.5 multiplier. With a full frame camera, absolutely.

The difference between 18mm and 24mm is tremendous.

RedRaider
02-21-2009, 10:48 AM
Thanks Smee, but 200mm I don't think will reah out far enough in sports, that's why I'm getting the 70-300mm.:)

Synxxx is right, I will have a 1.5 multiplier, so difference between 18 and 24 is tremendous.

I will using this mostly for my sons sports and don't plan on changing lens during his games. The next big lens purchase will be a MACRO, either 60mm or 105mm..:wth:

I have a 60mm Macro and like it. I took the Aquastream pump and FUFUFUFUFUFUFUFU flowmeter pictures with it. It is also cool to use it as a portrait lens. I think for a crop camera, the 105 would be too long. But some people like it so they do not have to get so close to bugs.

But be careful, it will show every wrinkle and zit on someones face it is so sharp. :D

I was just saying to get the 24-120 for walk around lens, MUCH lighter and more convenient.
My 30D is 1.6 crop size, my dad has 5D which is full frame and I tried the 24-70 on my vs. his and yes there is a tremendous difference, but have 24-120 for walk around stuff is nice especially for portraits. :)

But it's your personal preference I guess, I'm a little guy, so smaller is easier for me lolz....

For macro, depends on how close you get to your subjects, if you wanna see the eye of a fly, go 105mm, if you want close ups of regular computer parts then 60mm is great. :)

My walkaround for the 30D is 17-55 2.8 IS. This range is perfect for a crop walkaround.

Since there's some money to spend ;), I would also invest in good circular polarizing filters for those lenses.

Some nice warming filters are also great..

Hoya is always a great company for filters. A tad "expensive" but they know what they are doing.

From the experience i have, i own a measly D50 but am extremely happy with its results over a P&S. The difference is night and day when u switch to a DSLR and theyre so much easier and faster to use. I just got back from Florence and my dad had his P&S and got great shots (He was an avid Film SLR user so he knows his stuff) but the color through my DSLR was just so much more vivid...

I understand what Smee is saying using a 24-120 because the extra range is nice so u dont have to switch 24/7 like i sometimes have to, but id have a wide somewhere just in case...

Yes, one thing I forgot to mention is, that the more you switch lenses, and depending on the environment your in, it's more easy to get dust particles on your camera sensor.
However cleaning the sensor isn't really much a problem, but somewhat a pain to do and it'll ruin your lovely pictures if you have a dirty sensor.

And yea I think I'll be getting a wide lens sometime soon, there small and nice to have around. :)

Oh also, Red, make sure to get a Sandisk Extreme USB card reader (http://www.sandisk.com/Products/ProductDetails.aspx?productID=&CatID=1197), I have one, and this thing is THE fastest card reader I've ever used, and trust me, after a day of taking pictures with 500 pictures to upload on the comp, you don't want to be sitting there for half an hour to let it upload. I uploaded 2,000 pics from the Romania trip I went on in about 10 minutes.

And yet ANOTHER thing... I know I'm killin ya here... but you NEED to get Adobe Lightroom 2.0 (http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshoplightroom/).
It makes uploading/editing pictures a breeze and will save you MANY hours of editing.
I have lightroom, and I will never turn back to anything else.
Photoshop is also very complimentary with lightroom, like when doing HDR pictures and creating some special effects.
But bottom line, you cannot live without lightroom.

Oh also, Red, make sure to get a Sandisk Extreme USB card reader (http://www.sandisk.com/Products/ProductDetails.aspx?productID=&CatID=1197),

Oh just realized, the D90 uses SD cards, not CF...
CF is a bit faster than SD.

Fortunately Sandisk does make a 16GB SD Extreme III card!
http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-16gb-ExtremeŽ-30MB-Performance/dp/B001EDTL52

As for the card reader, just get the 3in1 version:
http://www.amazon.com/Sandisk-Extreme-Reader-SDDRX3-3IN1-901-Package/dp/B000H4CLXS

I use that and it's very handy to have both CF, SD and ProDuo connections in one little FAST reader. :)

Lightroom is absolutely AMAZING. You can alter any color in a picture just by sliding a single bar in the program, you can add vignetting, make it B&W, brighten with exposure, brighten the dark spots of the photo, cropping is as simple as a click/drag/Enter procedure.

Lightroom does it all, and it's cheap.

Basically they made Lightroom to help Photographers save time by taking all the little features that photographers use from Photoshop, and add a TON of extra awesome features to the program and made it Lightroom.

Basically Lightroom is part of photoshop, but much more better, and at a much more reasonable price. :)

Agree with Smee

Only thing is Id rather go with several smaller Cards versus one huge one.
Id hate to have a big 16 GB card go corrupt and lose....idk around 3000-4000 photos :D
Plus i learned that my camera counter lies. Says I have a total of 258 shots and i leave with 390 for 1 GB.

Sandisk makes the best CF/SD cards on the market for DSLR's, never ever heard of one going corrupt.
Just make sure to be careful with the cards, act as if it's a naked RAM stick when handling it lol. :P

Shouldn't have a problem. :)

Yep we have several sandisk's over here! All working great for 1 1/2 years +.

I'll probably go with the 8GB SanDisc Extreme III..

Sounds good!

Also, it's good to have a backup chip, for when sometime you accidently leave your main chip (in your case it'd be the 8GB) at home with the computer, you can just pull out the backup from your camera case to use.
I have a 2GB Lexor Professional CF (http://www.amazon.com/Lexar-CF2GB-133-381-Professional-Compact-Flash/dp/B000PK3G7O/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1235410868&sr=1-2), in your case you'd need the SD version:
2GB Lexor Professional SD (http://www.amazon.com/Lexar-SD2GB-133-380-Professional-Digital-SD2GB-133-380E/dp/B000EGHYBS).

Super dang cheap, but well worth it, I can list about 10 times in the last year that I had forgotten my 16gb chip in the card reader at my computer, and then just pulled out my 2GB from my cam bag (thats where you should store it) and it was all good. :)

RED. There are camera bags and there are KATA bags... there is no better. These folks make camera bags and matching flak jackets for war journalists - as an example.

You need my bags... the Kata Ergo-tech series. I actually have all three bags from this series I got each of them for under $50 on ebay.

First note that thier site sucks and doesn't do the products any justice whatsoever.

The Panorama-U (http://www.kata-bags.com/product.asp?p_Id=332&Version=Photo)

The Sensitivity-V (http://www.kata-bags.com/product.asp?p_Id=329&Version=Photo) (my favorite and also the bag I use just about every day).

and the Prism-U (http://www.kata-bags.com/product.asp?p_Id=330&Version=Photo)

I have something of a heterosexual luggage fetish. I collect bags and totes, and naps, and whathaveyous - among these are about 10 Kata bags and the ergotech series are the most versatile carriers I've ever seen. (I even call the Sensitivity-V my 'mobile command unit" because it holds everytihng I ever could possibly need... even a space blanket)

If those don't float your boat then you can search by camera model (http://www.kata-bags.com/kata.asp?Version=Photo) on their site to ensure the perfect match.

Images can be made available upon request if you want to pimp the ergo-tech line any further.

I should note that I am a man on the go 24/7 and the Kata line cater to mobile folk like me... if you don't find yourself in that category don't worry about it, the build quality will compensate your laziness =)

non zoom...like 50mm or 35mm only, but have very good quality pictures compared to a zoom.

The good thing about the 35mm is that its really like a 50mm in film standards.
50mm is generally used as the point where its the same as human eyesight or very close.
Gets u to move and actually compose ur shot rather than just zoom up and snap it.

I signed up for a 3 hour seminar for owners of the Nikon D90. It is being held in Houston on Saturday 14 March 2009, from 2-5PM. It is being presented by Paul Van Allen of Nikon USA and hosted by Ritz/Wolf Camera. This should be very good stuff. It's actually perfect timing for me.:)

The sales rep at Wolf Camera they will have some good deals on Nikon :crack: after the event.:woot:

Very nice! That should be fun, great way to start out with DSLR's lol.

Let us know how that goes. :)

Silverion, the salesman at Wolf Camera told me this is a traveling seminar, might want to check there website or call them and see if your area is on the tour.:). I'm so anxious to learn about the camera, how much more perfect timing could this be, it's only $25...:woot:

Smee, I say sell it if you have a lens to fill that gap. That 100mm macro would be sweet.

Good deal.

A camera (like any other instrument) is only as good as the wielder.

I use a three year old Sony bridge model, but I know how to take a picture. I was literally running yesterday with the camera, and you see what I got.

A good camera makes it easier, but a good camera will not make a bad photographer better. Effort still=results.

Glad to see you interested in learning all you can, though.

Why on earth do you want a super wide angle with f2.8?????

The 10-22 is a landscape lens, smee. At f2.8, a single light post in the mid-depth would be in focus and the foreground and background would be out of focus.

Most people using this lens are shooting at F8 or higher to get everything in focus.

The 17-40L, the most used landscape lens would be next in line. The 16-35 is overpriced and soft I hear.

Lol yea ok did some research, Tamron and Sigma are crap. Tokina is ok.

Reason is because I do a lot of low light indoor shots, and i'm constantly getting blurred shots because of my 28-135mm f/3.6...
I'd like to be able to do langscapes at amazingly wide angles but also have the ability to take pictures in low light situations.

Did some research, will be getting the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 lens, reviews say it actually beats the Canon 10-22mm, and is built like an L lens.

Slightly cheaper too.

check the reviews so you confirm what Im saying...

and I just bought a 70-200 f4 iS... men, thats a glass built like a tank !!!

That is a great lens, but I want as wide as possible with my crop-sensor canon 30D...
11mm translates to I think... 14-15mm I think? That means 17 is around 22mm, and I've seen what 24mm is like on a full sensor and thats just definitely not wide enough for my likes.

SOO.... I think Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 is the lens for me. :)

Thanks man, I'm pretty proud of that one, and it was set to auto IIRC.

Here's one my wife took of me doing 152 MPH down at Lowes Motor Speedway last spring. I think this was with her D-80, 70-200 lens. She took this one, no tripod from the pits which is pretty far away. She has the new anti vibration lens, and that thing just kicks ass. She uses her's a lot more than I do with all the settings. She's pretty good, photography is her hobby.

Good shots!
Mind if I critique a little?

First and foremost, especially when doing close-ups indoors with lightbox... etc.. use a tripod. I noticed several of the pics are a little blurry, probably due to being handheld and low light conditions.
500watt bulbs are perfect for lightbox's, and the right kind of white paper too.

First pic is definitely over exposed and not fast enough shutter speed, to much light coming in the lens, but then if you slow it down a bit and raise ISO, you could get some grainy dark shots.
The fix for this is better lights, OR a nice flash. :p

I've played with my make shift light box before and a LOT of my pics have come out like some of yours, but I have concluded that better lights and/or my external flash (Speedlight 580EX II (http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Speedlite-580EX-Digital-Cameras/dp/B000NP3DJW)) fill fix the problem. :)

Keep posting pics man! Thats a really nice lens. Can't wait to get my macro. heh...
