Just wanted to let people know, Windows 7 rocks. I have it (legit), I went to a Microsoft Event and everyone was given a copy of Ultimate.

One of the biggest improvements is how windows handles RAM. if you run vista, check you ram usage. You will probably find that Vista likes to cache all you ram, have no idea why but it does and it will cache almost all of it, no matter how much you have.

W7 does not do this. W7 seems to much more responsive. Its a nice change to a OS that actually works.

BTW - 64bit version also!!

Been rocking it 24/7 for a while now with no complaints. Much improved, even though I'm still on the RC build 7100. Will be getting a legit copy through school when it comes out.

Edit: Running it on an SSD - haven't followed too much about the improvements for those but it runs great and OCZ's cleanup utilities work with it.

Been running W7 64bit RC 7100 for 2 months on my lappy, best OS i've ever ran, hands down.
Made me switch from OSX, and it was only the RC!!

I'm buying a copy of Pro, or Ultimate when it comes out. :D

Yeah I love the new Windows! Running it on both the desktop and on the Mac via bootcamp/fusion! Awesome OS! Will be picking up the Home Premium version for cheap since I'm a student and will probably pick up the Pro version for the desktop thru work hopefully for cheap!

I was so pissed I couldn't go to the launch event. I had stupid class at work and couldn't get out of it. BUt I have 2 copies pre-ordered with the discounts. I got the Pro coming for 30 bucks for being a student, even though I am no longer a student.
Here is the deal. (http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=124692&t=1562761&highlight=windows+7+student)

Been running Win7 Pro 64-bit (legit) for a while now and absolutely love it. One of the best OS's I've ever run. It does what's it's supposed to do, sit in the background and not hog all my resources, and is very responsive.

I've been running Win7 Ultimate 64-Bit (TechNet) for a month and a half now. It still running strong and alot better than Vista. No issues with drivers at all. Boots fast and benchmarking with 3DMark06 flawlessly. It been a long time waiting for a decent OS.

I have 4 gigs and it cached 3 gigs of it.

When I installed win7, all the clouds outside went away and it instantly became summer. It was like the whole world changed for the better.

I swear!

I think some are overreacting. There is not THAT much of a difference and there are detriments as well.

I've been chewing on it in Sun's VirtualBox here and there, but this deal might make me actually upgrade. Thanks cyriene!

Detriments? Such as?

And yes, there is pretty large difference in overall system response and resource utilization.

Ill be holding off a bit. I only buy OEM copies and unless my GF raises hell shell be staying on XP. The rest of my PCs run Vista 64 so no real reason to shell out a bunch of coin to make the switch until I start rebuilding PCs next fall. Then Ill make the switch. Not worth it to spend 300 on new OSes then rebuild a year later.

I love the idea of XP Mode. Going to be rather helpful, and I agree that there is quiet a bit of difference in how it utilization your system.

Well the Enterprise migration lecture for XP users was helpful but...I was hoping for the copy of W7.

People still use Symantec....why?

I haven't needed spyware or virus protection since early XP days.

SAV 11 Enterprise is great, especially in a corporate setting where you manage your clients AV. According to Symantec they'll not have an updated version that correctly integrates into Win 7 until general availability. In the meantime, I've been using Microsoft Security Essentials.

Symantec Enterprise software and Symantec Personal software are two completely different things. Their Enterprise solutions are top notch, but fuck their personal software.

Yes, my point was Enterprise hasn't been updated for Windows 7, so all the SAV corporate users testing out 7 are SOL for the time being.

I have the enterprise version on my home PCs so it's all good. I love it on XP, low memory usage, never comes up with those annoying popups about how my computer is screwed. Just waiting for it to support win7 since I'll probably switch all my PCs over to win7, I love it so much

i just pre-ordered Win7 Home Premium 64, i need the following programs and am wondering if they have a compatable Win7 version out yet:

-Temperature/Fan/Voltae Monitoring
-CPU-Z
-ATI/Nvidia drivers
-Firefox/Thunderbird
-itunes
...

i'll be upgrading from using XP since the original days. its the only OS i know how to use, will i have a hard time learning how to use W7?

They all work. You'll have more problems because it's 64 bit (though I've had 0 problems) than you will because it's Win 7.

It doesn't integrate in with the security center. You get a nice red alert saying you have no anti-virus installed and you have to disable alerting for anti-virus.

Not saying it doesn't work, I'm saying it doesn't properly integrate into the security center.

I would say yes. I have been using Vista 64 for the past couple years with few problems.
MS requiring devs to write drivers for 32 and 64bit for certification has helped.
For everyday use and gaming 64bit is the way to go now. Especially because 4GB of RAM is so last year now as well ;)

LOUISSSSS
10-07-2009, 10:01 PM
i've been using xp32 for 4 years with 4gb of ram and i've never seen it near even 75% of full usage. maybe peaks at a time, but not constant.

3.2gb and i only use about 35-40% at idle at this point.

Trust me if you got a 64bit OS that idle number would change. I know mine did when I went from 32 to 64.

Well with 4GB I could easily get up to 80% when I had my browsers open, a game open, crunching, and other shit open
But I just stuck another 4GB for shits and giggles.

May use more. Superfetch is supposed to load your ram up with the most used applications so that they are quicker to open. If the space is needed for something else it'll be used for that instead.

yea i was aware of superfetch and i dont mind it using up the rest of the unused ram: unused ram is wasted ram anyway.
