View Full Version : What would you like to see in a memory review?

While I usually test watercooling stuff almost exclusively, I am at the moment testing some triple channel DDR3 memory kits.

I'm planning to keep testing new modules as they come in so that we end up with a list of comparable results covering (hopefully) most of the high end memory kits available out there.

I was wondering what you guys would like to see tested when it comes to memory. What is important in a memory review, in your opinion?

So far, I'm testing the performance with Super PI, 7-Zip and the EVEREST benchmarks.
For overclocking, I test whether the modules can achieve 7-7-7-20 timings and a what voltage. I also see how far I can push the memory clock without sacrificing CPU speed (i.e. if I can reach a few MHz higher memory speed but lose a few hundred MHz CPU speed, that doesn't count IMO).

Are there other benchmarks or tests that you would deem important?
Hope to get some great input (as always ;)).

Cheers,
Shane

Shane maybe you could post some sort of memory overclocking guide while you're at it? i think it would benefit this site...

those test are kind of standard to do now. do post which mobo you're gonna use and have available for testing...

Sure, I can do an overclocking guide for i7 platforms. I want to get some more experience under my belt first, though. I guess I'll just post a basic guide first and then maybe update it as I learn more myself.

Right now, I'm testing on a Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5.
I'm gonna switch that for a dual mount (775 and 1366) board asap though. Blood Rage or Asus P6T.

I thought only Blood Rage has it, and now you're telling me that P6T has it too? :O

What most people is interested to see (thus best to review) is :

Up to what speeds you can reach with the lowest timings ?
What is the top speed (loose timings) ?

Some aim for the max FSB, others aim for the highest FSP with tightest timings (I'm one of those).

I saw some pics of an P6T (non Deluxe) with dual mounting holes. Can't find it anymore since the asus-homepage tells me it's undergoing maintenance...

No Asus there either but here's a page might help you : http://www.anandtech.com/weblog/showpost.aspx?i=534

It's indeed with dual-mount and it say right from the start it's equally impressive to the P6T Deluxe even with a 8+2 Phase power vs the 16+2 for the Deluxe (my Maximus Formula is 8 phase as well I think).

Thanks for the link! That's exactly the board I meant.

I'll probably try to get a hold of that, though I haven't seen it for sale in any of the local stores yet.
