View Full Version : Custom made bench table

I would like to present a little something here in the RR-Forums, that you guys might like.
For my testing, I had been using a self-made wooden bench table. It was useful but flawed and with the experience I gathered from using it, an idea for the ideal bench table started to shape in my mind. Since it was clear that I wouldn't be able to build it myself (DIY skills not good enough), I went looking for someone who could make that table for me. I came across "LeChuck" on Forumdeluxx.de who is knows for making custom cases and asked him. He agreed to help me with my project. He made some improvements to my original design and then built the table I will present here with some fotos.
Here's what the table looks like. The second pic shows the rack for attaching graphics cards.

As you can see, it's pretty neat, but not very spectacular. Not yet, anyway.
Here is the key to what makes this table so great:
http://www.abload.de/img/0351up.jpg
:D
Those brackets are for attaching radiators.
The brackets can be attached to the side of the table:
http://www.abload.de/img/04dani.jpg
And the real highlight is that they are variable and fit almos any size radiator on the market. Behold:
120 radiator:

140 radiator:

140 and 240 radiator:

Pretty clever, huh? :D
Comments welcome! I'll post some pics of the table with hardware installed later on.
Cheers,
Shane

table is nice.. the rad support or for other uses is also a good idea... i would say if you could also do it with the rad standing up...

I like the design. If I didn't have a four-year-old, I'd be more interested in bench tables :D

Nothing is impossible. ;)
In fact, even with shipping overseas, this bench would probably still be cheaper than a banchetto. :D

You have some estimated price?
Looks very nice :)
And btw what's the weight? (maybe stupid question but I have some idea ;>)

Well, I paid 135 Euros for this, including shipping. That's currently about 190 Dollars.
The weight? I don't know. Since all the hardware is installed right now, it's also no use if I try to weigh it now. But it's heavier than most cases I'm used to since I usually have Lian Li cases and they're full aluminium. I would say it has the weight of a non-alu tower case.

HES, that's quite heavy...

Does the creator of these keep stock on hand or are they built to order?

They are all built to order.
Modifications and extras should be no problem.

Nice work!!!!! Sturdy looking simple design.
Are there rad mounting options other than having the rads right on top the MB? If not, that might cause a problem with testing.

Care to elaborate ? I see the pics and the radiators is in a good spot (you can put them on 2 sides) without talking about the fact that if you position the fans correctly, there are airflow blowing across the motherboard to cool the components.
mcoffey

Depends on what your testing as far as the heat from the rads dumping across the MB. Ain't going to cool much with 30-32C air blowing across it. Especially when it's right on top the CPU area. It would actually be re-heating the very component your likely to test, and that would be adding one more variable in the repeatability equation.

I see what you mean... Would it be solved by making sure the fans is blowing away ? Another solution is to have bent brackets so the radiators is 45 degree from the vertical line (thus having air avoid the surrounding of the motherboard) ?
mcoffey
12-28-2008, 09:48 AM
Then you'd be sucking warm air off the CPU and Mem area into the rad. Again, not controlable as far as repeatibility goes as it relates to testing. Even if I was using it as a open air case, I wouldn't want the rads/fans right on top the MB pulling or pushing the warm air to or from the MB area. You just lose efficeincy that way.
That why I was asking about other mounting options.

Nice work! Very clean/functional desgin.

Rads can also be attached vertically:

V2 of the table has some minor changes and is made out of Aluminium:

Some in black, some in white:

And finally, here (http://www.hardwareluxx.de/community/showpost.php?p=11551763&postcount=270) you can find some renders of V3 with extras like fan brackets and a reservoir holder.

are you planning on mass producing these? How much for an aluminum in black? Any chance to support 8 or more pci slots to support future motherboards and extended motherboards?
HESmelaugh
04-02-2009, 05:27 AM
Right now, they are being produced in charges of ten.
The Price is currently at about 100€ plus shipping, though that is the price for the V2 without extras. We expect to see further changes and improvements to the design of this table to keep it up to date.
For now, there is no real mass production.

Thanks for the positive feedback, everyone! :)
I have to say that it makes testing so much easier. Having an open bench like this cuts the fiddling and time it takes to swap blocks and components around in half.

Anyone interested in purchasing one of these, just PN me. :)
If several are interested, group buy is also possible. Save a bit on shipping.
EDIT: Oh, and just for the record: I don't earn anything on the sales, so I don't have any intention to push product on anyone. All I'm saying is that if you're interested, I can make the connection to the guy producing the tables.

Quick and probably dumb question...
Is there something wrong with running ur computer all the time on a bench?
Ive always wanted to run a computer as just a bench instead of a case...think it looks neat

There is only a problem if you fear EMI. It's very rare EMI would be an issue in most home living environments.

I ran my computer on a bench table for a really long time. Not a problem. Good thing is you can place a fan on top of just about anything haha, makes cooling certain parts easy.

As mentioned, EMI could be an issue. I've been running the test-rig(s) on open benches for about a year now and have never had a problem with it. Of all of the people who also bought one of these tables, I haven't heard any complaints. So I would say it's pretty safe.
