Featuring Gigabyte's new Ultra Durable technology, the new X58 series has such features as 2 oz of copper lper layer for increased thermal dissipation and enhanced stability at high FSB.

That board looks like a real winner to me. Looking forward to some updates. Also, any of you guys out there with an i7 system willing to write a "How to" on overclocking these babies? Alot of us have never seen these systems and don't know what it takes to overclock them.

Alright, here's my first stab. All I did was up the bclk to 160 and set the volts manually to 1.2v on the CPU.
I also set all the memory speeds to the rated speed for my RAM. I have a lot of learning to do with this bios as first of all, it's Gigbyte and I'm used to Asus and second of all, it's i7 and I'm used to Core2.

I've read as much as I can about it, but I'll go back and read it again now that I've actually got the chip running.
Which one is it?

LOL.
Yeah, I've watched that one a few times and I've read a lot about how this goes.
I'm taking it slow. It's still going strong small FFTs coming up on 8 hours.
I woke up early because my daughter's sick.:(

8 Hours done small FFTs. All the settings at Auto except vcore at 1.2v in bios (1.12v under load)

Alright, I flashed to the new F4l bios and now my previous settings don't work. It won't even boot!
I'm going to look for the F3 bios and see what happens.

let the other's play with the new bios gigabyte bios are funny as what work before never work agin
zlojack
12-14-2008, 01:22 PM
Yeah...the F4l was crap.
I'm on the F3 now, so I'll try and see what I can get out of it. Some guys over at "that forum" were getting some good bclk with F4k, but I haven't found that file.
zlojack
12-14-2008, 03:06 PM
Alright, I'm back up on F3 and running ok.
I'm going to give 200 bclk another run.
I'm also going to try the F4 bios again as I think I was messing with RAM sub-timings which might have screwed things up.
There's a lot to learn on these new boards!!!

Well, I just installed Windows again.
The last bios flash lost me one of my RAID drives :D
A little Sunday afternoon fun!
Back at it. I'm going to try to drop all multis down low and just work on bclk
zlojack
12-14-2008, 07:58 PM
Ok...now testing bclk 170 and things are moving along.
Passed a short Prime95 run, so I'll be bumping to 180.
Basically, all I did was lower the multis on everything and up the bclk.
Still not sure on voltages. I've been leaving mostly auto (which scares me)
zlojack

I left 200 bclk priming this morning. We'll see how it is when I get home.

Ok 12 hours SmallFFT with 200 bclk DONE!
It gets very hot! I need to get my water up and running!
Now I can try to dial my RAM in to it's spec and then hopefully when I get on water I'll make a run at 4GHz!

dam high temps at 80C...
feels like our water cooling it ain't gonna be enough...
zlojack
12-16-2008, 09:20 AM
Yep. 80*C on the stock cooler, so we need to remember that.
I'll have it on an EK Supreme with a 120.2, so hopefully that will make a difference.
But no question these chips are HOT!

Alright, I've got 200 bclk stable 8 hours Prime95 blend with the following settings.
Bclk - 200
CPU - 16 (3.2GHz No turbo)
RAM - 8 (1600 MHz)
Uncore - 16
QPI - 18 (36 in bios)
Volts
CPU - 1.26 bios 1.2 idle 1.18v load
RAM - 1.64v bios
QPI/PLL - 1.355v bios
CPU Pll - 1.84v bios
All other settings are currently at Auto.
I'm going to start playing with the RAM timings to get them to their rated spec.
zlojack
12-18-2008, 01:12 PM
Argh!
Still having issues with stability.
I'm going to try another bios revision. I need to start isolating where the instabilities are :(

Alright, looks like I've got a mildly stable OC at 3.36GHz on stock volts now. Not bad :D
Maybe I'll keep this motherboard after all.
